My Crazy Sexy Life

HI everybody
I am brand new to this site and am getting really excited about what I have read so far. I am a hodgkins lymphoma survivor and just finished chemo a month ago. I am looking forward to dramatically changing my life style, and eating habits.
I used to drink a green drink, and was told to stop during chemo. I want to get back but need some help. Does anyone know of a brand that is "better" ... maybe even organic? Also, is it best to drink it on an empty stomach in the morning? Do you also do a weekly detox when drinking a green drink? Thanks so much in advance! Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Kinberli,

I think the green drink most of us drink is a fresh juiced green drink. Made out of different greens, like kale, romain lettuce, or spinach, celery, parsley, cucumber, lemon, apple, ginger. At least that is what mine usually consists of. You can do pretty much anything. But it sounded like maybe you were drinking a premade drink? You'll need a juicer to do a fresh green drink, and organic veggies are always best.

Do you mean green drink...like the powdered super foods kind or...?

Hi Kylie

Yes, I mean the powdered drink. I was drinking one from our local health food store, an 'ultra green concentrated super food' - contained organic - alfalfa, barley grass, wheat grass, rye grass etc ... plus some other fruits / veggies / flax / bee pollen ....
I really felt better while drinking it. Thank you so much for any info!

Kimberli, I think its fantastic that you want to make healthy changes to your lifestyle, congratulations!! Feeling empowered to take your life back after treatment is amazing, I know. You can go to Whole Foods to find supplements, the people who work there are very knowledgeable - and also, check around Kris' blog and website for more info, she has discussed this before. As far as detox, you need to be very careful because you've just completed treatment. You don't want to overload your body of too much of the toxins that still linger. I would check for a nutritionist/naturopath in your area who can review your situation and help you get started. Good luck and continued good health!!

my father is about to begin chemo, and he's really been doing well with the fresh green drink. should he be taking out all raw foods during treatment?

Cara - If you ask his docs, chances are good that they will say yes. Once his blood counts drop, the fear and chances of the bacteria/dirt on the veggies, etc. causing an infection increases. That said, there are ways to continue the raw foods and juicing - carefully and cautiously - I would only use organic and even then, make sure to wash them with a safe-for-food peroxide solution. Someone here will have to be more specific - my chemo brain just isn't remembering at the moment what it is. There are also supplements and anti-oxidants that don't react well with chemo too. I'd make a list and ask, ask and continue to ask all the questions you have until you get your answers!! Hope this is a helpful start.

Yes, thank you so much. He was previously on a feeding tube going through radiation to his mouth and throat along with the chemo, so all of his nutrition was in a can. We're reading all of these conflicting theories that its getting him frustrated. But we'll be seeing a nutitionist this week that can hopefully point him in the right direction.

hey kimberli happy to see you on this site youll get some great info from it I think...
just a note knowing you from th HL list are you not about to start radiation? if so best to check with the radiation oncologist of you can start using the hardcore anti-oxidants yet or not.. I never had radiation as I was stage III HL but I have heard that with radiation treatment even vitamin c tabs are a no no... so check with your rads oncologist to find out... as for whats the best green drinks well fresh juiced is the best you can get but if not when all else fails greens + is the best on the market from what I can tell I have used a lot of them over the eyars but greens +
has always seemed to be the most whole .... hope this helps... take care
with much warrior strength
Neil..
