My Crazy Sexy Life

Hi all....i'm new to this....i have stage 2a non-bulky hodgkins lymphoma and am undergoing traditional chemotherapy treatment. My hair started to fall out just before my second treatment, so my hubby and i buzzed it with clippers. Now, some is growing, some is falling out, his looks great, and mine is patchy. I've read that i shouldn't use a razor to take care of the rest, but i'd like to clean it up, any ideas?

Hi Katie,
First, go you for having the courage to buzz it! Sounds like your hubby is a good support.....
The reason people are often discouraged from using razors during chemo is #1, platelets can become low, so if you get knicked, it can take a longer time to stop bleeding, and also, #2, if there are miniscule cuts and so forth, you open yourself up to infection b/c during chemo, people's immune systems are often lowered b/c of white blood cell counts.....I would talk to your oncologist and see what he/she recommends you do.
hope this helps a little!!
be well,
jaime

In my case the hair follicles were already loose or fairly loose within my scalp - they just wouldn't fall out on their own. Now, if you hair is growing back as well, I'm not sure how well this will work (I never had this problem), but I actually used masking tape on my head to pull out the rest of the already broken hairs with no pain. Can't promise it will work for you, but perhaps worth shot?

I used the tape too and it worked. I also stood in the shower and rubbed and rubbed my head and got rid of alot of the left over hairs that way. Did the same thing with towel drying my head too. It only took a couple days and all the hair was gone.

I'm actually right there with you. I think the only thing about not using a razor is that people are worried you might cut yourself. If you're going through traditional chemo, your counts are probably low, and your blood wouldn't clot as fast as it normally would. The infection thing is probably also the big worry. So, as long as you're careful, I'm sure you could still shave it.

I agree. had the same thing happen, and i found sticking my head under the tap and giving a scalp massage did the trick. My family wouldn't let me have the razor...LMAO. You may find that it starts to grow back in btwn treatments, then falls out again. Kind of a hair tease if you will. Good luck and stay warm!
