My Crazy Sexy Life

Hopalong

What's my cancer color??? Sorry, but I'm pissed over pink.

Please don't hate me for what I'm about to say...It's just how I'm feeling these days...

It's that time of year again where everything is PINK!!! and I do mean everything...soup cans, utensils, mints...you name it...I hate to admit this, but it kinda pisses me off when I see all the pink packaging...I mean where is my color???? I'm glad breast cancer has such awareness, especially since the number of women who will get it is so high...But what about all the other cancers??? Don't they deserve some packaging? Don't they deserve to get funds from companies? Cancer sucks, no matter what kind it is...

Someone send some color my way so I can sense the awareness of my cancer.

Lorri,
I understand..living w/epilepsy and other nasty disorders with stigmas attached for years just really pissed me off to no end and there were no ribbons for me and I wish there weren't for me now. But I found one site for you. Your ribbon is white love...osteosarcoma is bone cancer, yes? See this site love...but it is not in the ribbons...it is in the awareness and in our voices, use yours as make a new ribbon of your own...and be aware ...you are loved and you are not alone...explore this site...blessed be, Bren

White is sooooo boring, but on the other hand I guess the color is already on just about everything packaged by just about every company...Now I guess it's just time to get the word out. It could be worse it could be black or gray...(Sorry to those of you who that's your color.)

Hi Bren,
I totally understand. Nobody knows that September is Childhood Cancer Awareness and Gold is childhood cancers and Orange is leukemia. Purple means Cancer Survivor why can't we all just where Purple?

This is such an interesting topic. The whole pink thing has gone seriously and deliriously out of control. From the enormity of this marketing campaign, one would think there was no other type of cancer, let alone other types of serious illnesses.

As I've mentioned before, the worst thing (to me) is what Breast Cancer Action calls "pinkwashers." This refers to companies who market pink products that are actually known to promote breast cancer.

From the "Think Before You Pink" website: (a project of Breast Cancer Action)

"In 2008, Estee Lauder will donate $500,000 from the sales of its Pink Ribbon Collection of cosmetics to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in an effort to raise awareness about breast cancer. Meanwhile, the company refuses to sign the Compact for Safe Cosmetics to ensure that its products do not contain chemicals that are known or strongly suspected of contributing to the disease."

Check out the Think Before You Pink website. Right now they are requesting that people ask Yoplait (a big pinkwasher!) to stop using milk with rBGH (bovine growth hormone).

Thanks Genie, you are right on with posting this site. Now, don't get me wrong - I am a breast cancer survivor, l like pink, I have some pink items, and yes I have designed some shirts that are pink, however I find it appalling all the pink crap that is out and all the pink ribbons that are placed on EVERYTHING just to get people to think they are buying something that will be making a big difference. The site that you provide is such an eye-opener and once I stumbled across that last year I have not bought a single item that is pushed by these companies. It is disgusting and contradictory to me to see sugary, processed, and totally non-related items plastered in pink (take a peek at a photo I posted the other night of cookies and cupcakes - WTF?) AND THEN to find out that in several instances the amount actually donated is pennies, yet the company takes glory for supporting breast cancer.

So thanks for posting this and I agree that PINK is on overkill this time of year! I support Pink, breast cancer awareness, and all that, but I think it has become a marketing tool and is deceiving people in thinking they are doing something good.

Right on Genie. I hate the pink hypocrisy!!! Also, I hate being reminded of my disease and the misconceptions about it's causes and cures EVERYWHERE I friggin go. If i thought that money was being put to good use maybe it would make me cheerful that so many people care but it's more about the people who do care being manipulated by the marketing tactics of those who could really care less, like Estee Lauder.

I could see how people could feel left out with this pink shit being all over but please, the grass is always greener. I for one am sooooo tired of being constantly reminded of my disease.

Oh yeah, that Estee Lauder is another pink washer what with all the parabens and such.

Genie,
Thanks so much for posting this web site, it is very enlightening. I mean I knew that silicon pink wire whisks weren't necessarily going to solve the problem, but the food issue, especially the Yoplait is very enlightening.

don't just ask Yoplait to stop using rBGH milk- just stop buying their yogurt and write them telling them why. i was in france a few years ago and i needed a quick snack. i went into a corner market and the only thing i could find was a stupid Yoplait yogurt. i think it's a terrible brand- way too much gelatin and gum. it has a fake texture. i never buy that brand. anyway, here i am in paris, france and its the only yogurt they have and they only had two of them. well, it was unbelievably delicious, so real and fresh. it was about the best yogurt i had ever had and it came in a cute glazed terra cotta reusable cup. i went right back and bought the other one! it had nothing at all to do with the Yoplait yogurt sold in the states aside from the graphics on the label. i've had many european friends and expat american friends tell me that the food in the US is awful and that even the same brands in europe are different- less sugar, fake stuff, etc
sorry, i know this has nothing to do with you color discussion but your mention of Yoplait caught my eye

Genie... so interesting! Here in Canada two businesses- Texas Lonestar Restaurants and M&M Meat Shops- do a big fundraiser for colorectal cancers and ileitus-colitis (?!?) Hmmmmm.... you gotta wonder.

Lorri, I am thinking about color too. I have breast cancer...okay, HAD breast cancer (note to self: SAY HAD, dear)...and though I know that pink is THE color for it, I have never liked it, even long, long before I was ever diagnosed with the disease. I was never a pink kind of girl, though I do support the cause, respect it and will wear something tiny that is pink, like a ribbon pin, or something of that nature.

To me all cancer is red, fire engine, wicked red - firey and intense, or perhaps a deep burgundy, like blood or wine. Or maybe it is a hot lime green color that speaks of life but draws the eye to it in startled surprise. I was at an American Cancer Society event a week ago and the volunteers were wearing bright lime green...I loved it - felt it most suitable for me, as if it screamed out, "Pay Attention Now"....or Royal blue or purple, hunter green to hunt the cancer down...

See the color of your choice in your mind...what speaks to you is YOUR color, the one that drives you to press forward and go on, the one that pushes you to live.
