My Crazy Sexy Life

This may be a sensitive subject, but I feel it is important to bring up. I have been receiving what I would consider spam from this list. The emails come from someone who I have "friended" on this list but generally amount to solicitation to either visit their personal website, buy their products, read their views on a personal blog, etc. Since I have not requested membership to a mailing list, this is defined as spam.

Now, I hate to complain but honestly I signed up to be a friend not to be on a mailing list. I belong to multiple social networking sites with many of the same people so I may get 6 to 10 emails over the course of a couple of days from the same person. (There is more than one person I am receiving emails from.) I have never received a personal email from these individuals, only those outlined as above.

Here are my questions:

1. Am I being too sensitive or critical? Is this acceptable to use friendships on this site as email lists?

2. What can I do to stop this for myself? If others are ok with it, that's fine but I get (literally) hundreds of junk emails daily and I would like to cut back. I have already blocked emails from the two members who I get the most spam from but they keep on coming.

Sorry if I have hurt anyone's feelings. Just need to clarify this for myself.

I have received things like that as well, and my first thought was "how did that person get my email address"? I think this is definitely a privacy issue that needs to be addressed by CSL.
You are definitely not the only one. I think there is still a good intention with it, people wanting share info and products for health improvement but they should definitely be giving the option not to receive future emails if you do not desire it. If they don't, then they should be a way to report it.
Me too, I just deleted them.
If I receive emails like this, I delete them and ask the sender not to send any more. Most people are not offended by being asked not to send out emails.
You're not being too sensitive and I agree with your concerns. I generally just ignore the messages but I hate being sold stuff, even if it is from well-intentioned friends through CSL! Suggesting a product is fine, but I think it should be done on the general message boards and not through personal emails. Thanks for bringing this up, Lori.
Hi Everyone!
You can block emails from your friends by going to the friends icon at the top of the page, finding the friend in the drop down menu and selecting the block email option under their profile picture. Although you are receiving emails from them, they do not have your email address. Unfortunately, we do not have a better solution to this problem at the moment. Check out Ning's help website here.
Let us know if changing your friend settings helps with the emails.
Be Well!

Hi and thanks for your response. I did block and continued to receive emails. The bigger question, for me, is this: are these members abusing the priveleges of CSL by soliciting other members via mass email? I know that it is now allowed on the forums so I am wondering if this practice is "allowed" by the rules or not. As the site grows, this issue is likely to grow and could potentially become a big problem. Wonder if there is a proactive solution to avoid greater issues in the future?

Thanks again.

Lori
I also got e-mails to my off-line account from members and I didn't give my e-mail out to them. Just a question to the universe..how does this happen and how can we prevent the "abuse". the town rules clearly state that we are not to "solicit" on this site, but can put stuff on our own pages if members are interested or links to off-CSL blogs to announce further information. Just curious. I feel like Lori, don't want to limit or offend anyone, but would like to retain my privacy and the issue of choice. Perhaps a reminder from the heads of the realm to the members en masse may prove beneficial? Just a suggestion if it is deemed to be in the best interest to the realm. So many are new and may not take time or know there are guidelines on the front pages and its not mentioned in welcome messages. I personally wish to thank CSL for all they do to help us maneveur in the often difficult area of managing this lovely, healing virtual community. Thanks to Lori for saying what a lot of us have been feeling and didn't know where to go with it. Peace and hugs, Bren
I agree -- I dislike receiving universal emails that not only go out to lists of friends, but to everyone on the whole site.

For one thing, I don't like to clog up my email box.

For another, I am repelled by self-promotion.

It's good to know I'm not the only one who dislikes this.
I agree completely! I've also made it onto these lists and am receiving emails to my personal account. I don't believe this is the place at all for personal promotion.

If these people think that they have something that they want to share with the group, they should post them to a forum where the rest of us could choose whether or not we want to read it.
I get them also but it really doesn't bother me; I just delete them. No biggy.
I got more today. A young man was one and I was able to see that he sent it from his "My Space" account. Perhaps looking for our e-mails that way?? Maybe the leaders would consider "rewording" the town rules solicitation rule to include using contacts from here to go to other venues of communication is forbidden unless given express permission to do so. Word it as you wish...just a thought.

This was a plea for money...not cool.
Thanks for your consideration and your hard work to resolve this issue. I love the realm but would like to keep these items on this site, not get "baited" by information gathered and taken off somewhere else. They are not listed as "friends" to my "My Space", but can still get your e-mail out there. Its kinda like having the neighbor fix their house and the salesman goes to every house in the neighborhood to sell their ideas and wares. At least here at my house, I can post a "no solicitation" sign in my yard. We are not intended to be a collective data base.

Thank you for hearing me..and the others. Peace and love, Bren
