Oncologist/Treatment Center Recommendation/Florida/Prostate Cancer

Hi All. My stepdad met today with his oncologist for the first time regarding his malignant biopsy on his prostate. He wasn't crazy about the guy and is looking to get a second opinion, in the Tampa Florida area.

I've recommended Moffit; since I've heard so many good things -- but I was hoping to hear from some folks here that might have experience with prostate cancer...as far as how they feel regarding surgery vs. radiation, any recommendations in the Florida area for treatment centers, etc.

All I know is the tumor is at a 6 (whatever that means) on a scale of one to ten for growth rate (with one being the slowest, and 10 being the most aggressive). I know he was given options of traditional surgery, some type of what I would believe is laparoscopic surgery, or radiation and all three have the same success/cure rate ...somewhere between 70 and 85 percent.

Anything (info, inspiration, sage advice) you can provide will be most humbly appreciated.

God Bless, Vicki C.

Moffitt is good. MD Anderson also has a satellite campus in Orlando.. http://www.orlandohealth.com/mdanderson/index.aspx

I can't speak from experience as to which one is better, but I have heard very many wonderful things about MD Anderson.

I hope this helps some sweet lady!!! *muah*

Vicki, I'm sorry to hear about your stepdad. I am not familiar with anyone in the Tampa area....but I am keeping him in my prayers. xoxo

Hi Vicki,

I know you're looking for advice on prostate cancer specialists, which I don't have, but I am a patient at Moffitt -- I travel there from NC -- and have been having a very good experience there. I am actually going down there on Mon. for my 8th visit in 3 months (I'm in a clinical trial there), so if your stepfather does end up going there, please let me know if you need any travel information (e.g., hotels near Moffitt, etc.).

Take care,

Kristy

Hi Kristy. I am sorry I haven't replied sooner, I just saw your post. He had a second opinion at Moffit on Wednesday and he really liked the staff there. He's now in the decision making process on which route to go. Moffit is only about an hour from their home...they live in New Port Richey, FL.
I will add you to my prayer list...for a successful trial and a lifetime of health and happiness.

Hi Vicky C.
I had brachytherapy(seed implants)/radiation about 12 yrs ago and it worked great for 8 years, then it returned as stage3 in my lymphatic system.Did lupron/zoladex/casodex and that knocked it down for a few years and now my spine and ribs have lots of black areas on the PT scan. Now doing chemo which is another short term fix.
Solutions: alter your diet see,(drday.com) also lots of, vitamins minerals, herbs, also check--out Oregano/fungus connection on a Google search.
My personal suggestion, if I was fortunate enough to do it over would be have it surgically removed ASAP as it can increase your survival time the most.Your sex life is far less important than your" Health" life. And above all eat a proper diet as that is how most of us get cancer and other illnesses.

Some of you may remember the old nostrum on TV,"Better Living Thru Chemistry". YEAH RIGHT!!!!!!
If, we are what we eat then we will qualify as a toxic waste dump. LOL BILL

Bill thank you very much. He just went to Moffit for a second opinion on Wednesday and is considering the pellet therapy ... is that what brachytherapy is? This has been helpful information and I am going to pass your post on to him. Thank you so much for your help.

Here's my story about prostate cancer. My father in law was diagnosed with it at the age of 72. Age is important as decisions to be made are all about the age of the person. Anyway, he did his research and his conclusion was that people with treatment live about ten years and people without treatment live about ten years, so he opted for no conventional treatment.

You may not be surprised to hear that he lived for ten years. He was healthy, active, even working every day, until 3 months before his death, when he took a dramatic turn downhill. I personally believe that he maintained that level of health for that long because he did not go in for the cut, burn, or poison type of treatment.

He did, however, avail himself of all sorts of alternative treatments, including acupuncture and herbs.

His diagnosis was in 1991, so there's been plenty of change since then, but I don't know if the ten year thing still stands. And a ten year timeline may (or may not) be acceptable to a 72 year old, but it's not likely to be acceptable to someone younger.

My cousin was treated for prostate cancer a couple years ago, and he was around that same age, but decided that since his mother and grandmother lived well into their nineties, that the idea of ten more years of life was unacceptable to him. He went for radiation and, regrettably, he suffers from painful side effects to this day.

Current research is indicating that men 75 and over who have prostate cancer are more likely to die from something else as their prostate survival prognosis is probably better than their chances of dying from heart disease, etc. Therefore, the US Preventative Services Task Force is no longer supporting PSA tests for men over 75. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/05/health/research/05prostate.html?r...

I'm glad to hear that your stepdad went to Moffit and was happy with his second opinion. It is my humble opinion that whatever we decide to do, we have to get well informed on the diagnostics before moving forward.

I'm hoping the very best for you and your step-dad!

Hi,
Please listen to me. If surgery is offered, please have him do it. Othrerwise they will put him on this watcha nd wait thing, witch is pure hell, and not a good way to live. My brother waited too late to get surgery, and trust me he have been suffering every since. If not for the Lord on our side, his would have expired a long time ago.
