Ok, I've been reading post and discussions since I joined this wonderful crazy sexy cyber world and I just don't get it. I don't get the whole eatting RAW thing or the green juices and such. Why do we do it? How do we do it? Where are the recipes? Just how RAW is raw? Is steam or blanched raw? What about suppliements? Rember the song "Dizzy?" Yeh thats me, and my head is spinning! I need help! I need a life coach! I need someone to hold my hand through all this!
Linda
I don't get the whole raw food, juicing, eating all healthy all the time either Linda. I do know that incorporating these things into our diet is definitley healthy, but if you are not used to it, I strongly recommend going slowly.
I tried to quit bad eating habits cold turkey, and ended up on a sugar binge. I talked to my nutrionist about it, and she advised me to slowly incorporate juicing, raw veggies, etc. I have slowly but surley been making progress.
I have successfully replaced my morning caramel machiotto with a lovely 24oz, carrot, beet, and apple blend.
You'll get there, just take your time :)
Jenny M
P.S. I still enjoy a good T-bone from time to time, and a nice cheesy pizza.... Its all in moderation :)
Hi Linda,
I think there are two ways to go (and variations within the second way). All depends on you knowing how best you make changes.
Way number one is 100% full out.
I am not someone who can do that and be successful so I am taking the one step at a time approach. I started by making sure I had a lot more fresh salads in my day. I then began starting my morning with a fruit smoothy with frozen wheat-grass juice mixed in. After I was used to doing this, I invested in a juicer and added a lovely veggie juice into my day. I went out and bought one cookbook to begin and checked out the blogs and websites on the site. I will take one recipe that jumps out - buy the ingredients and then make it and enjoy it. (have you tried the raw-vegan chocolate mouse that was posted around a month ago - so so easy and so so yummy).
As for green drinks - if you aren't ready to buy a juicer you can buy good quality green powder in a health food store. I found one that contains wheat grass, kale, broccoli and many many others. I have brought it with me on my trip and it is really easy to mix the 2 tsp with water in the morning!
As for the why there are probably many reasons but the main ones for me are to bring my body from being acidic to alkaline. (you can buy a roll of litmus paper at health food stores and can test your pH by taking a small piece and touching the saliva in your mouth - I did it often for the first while so I could see the change!) but also to bring the aliveness of food to your body. Many enzymes are weakened or destroyed by heat.
I am still a long way off; however, my pH is now alkaline! Be mindful of what you are putting in your body and why and make steps that are comfortable and do-able for you - or go all out and jump in with both feet!
PS we are all in this boat together and holding each other up along the way. So yes, hands are extended!
Personally I gave up coffee, sugar, and meat all in one fell swoop...100%. I don't crave any of it! A few weeks back I opened a can of diet sunkist, took one swallow and couldn't take any more of it. my body no longer craves or desires them. It's that season again where Starbucks has my favourite coffees, I've not gotten the first one haven't even had the urge. Anyway! That being said...
When I first jumped into this whole lifestyle I was lost, a fish out of water! I literally had pizza places on my phones speed dial, but went from that to smoothies, juicing, and raw food bliss oh my. Gotta say, it's been AWESOME for my body - woooo! Pounds are flying away, I don't even recognise myself in the mirror anymore.
Do I stumble? Yes, at times. But even my stumbles are mere blips... it's at least a vegetarian stumble. So it happens, just can't beat yourself up about it. Life goes on, hell won't freeze over... pigs might fly, but that means you've got the right dealer. LOL! (i know, lame!)
I would be more than happy to help you in any way possible. You've got my phone number, call it if you need help, a shoulder, or whatever! You can do it, and I have no doubt about it!
Why? I suppose that's different for everyone. I myself don't have cancer. I do have other problems and issues and I think the why for me has some health reasons and some reasons that are probably 'bad' reasons.
How? I haven't got there yet - I mean i understand the increasing raw veggies, green juice (I don't have a juicer so I try and do at least 5 green smoothies a week). I personally have a hard time eating a lot of raw veggies and so for myself personally - I have to remember that eating a huge dish of roasted veggies is better than eating an entire box of cookes or replacing my meals with a whole large bag of chips (which is something that I have done and will probably do in the future. I am not perfect!) But I agree Jenny M - cold turkey isn't for me and believe me, I've tried numerous times.
Supplements - that is something I'm not good with! I finally got a multi-vit and some omega-3 oil that I use. But I'm terrible at trying to figure out which ones are really good ones etc...
I think for me personally - my goal is to try to every day make more healthy choices than I used to and be sure that I have veggies every day.
Think of it this way - you are what you eat. I know its a tired old thing but really you are what you put into yourself. I have always called it chemical food - anything where the label has words you can't pronounce and don't know what they are. I have always tried to keep my intake of chemical food down and now do even more so. I eat products that are natural, organic, plain, and simple. I read labels and eat as healthy as I can. My husband has not yet noticed how little meat (and he's a meat and potatoes guy) he gets these days.
I am not saying I don't enjoy some nachos or pizza now and again. But I try to make those healthy. We have pizza I make at home. Whole wheat crust with fresh veggies and only a tiny bit of cheese. I try to eat a lot of seafood as well.
I haven't gotten in to juicing. Partly because I prefer just to eat fresh fruit and veggies when I can but I have eliminated lots of bad stuff in the past year - white sugar, flour, etc. I am pickier than I used to be and am adding more grains.
Its really a lifestyle change to transition to. Start slowly. Maybe add a salad with dinner every night. Then change your lunch to be a salad as well. Plan meals. Pre chop salad veggies so you can assemble quickly.
Linda - I am one of those who went cold turkey in June. However, I think you are asking about the "how" as well. There is so much to digest here, so many websites and books to read ... but no clear roadmap.
One reason for that is because we are all different. However, the goal of our collective journey is all the same - crazy sexy health, lives, souls, hearts, etc. Some people start with nutrition, them add meditation, exercise, yoga, or whatever is right for them over time. Some go cold turkey.
When Kris asked on her blog what things we wanted to see in the CSL "mercantile" I responded that I didn't want more things, that I wanted INFORMATION. Information about all of these concepts that we see here - alkaline vs acidity, sugar or no sugar, digestive enzymes -what are they, do I need them? What about juicing - what and how much? What are probitics? What about eating things in the right combo? How come it's okay to colon cleanse with coffee but not drink it? Supplements? Add in 1000 more questions about how do I incorporate these things into my busy life. And why should I do it?
The problem is that this invaluable information is all right here from many wizened souls. But it is not organized in a way that is really useful. You can't sit here and pick through thread after thread looking for specific information. I finally had to digest several books quickly. I really don't have time to read 5 - 10 books. I needed the condensed version.
Somebody would be wise to put the CSL "lifestyle" into modules such that as individuals we could pick and choose which module would be right for us to start with, then which one to add next. For example, the first thing that I did was cut out all animal products, then I began juicing, then I added in yoga. After that I investigated going vegan, then raw. Shortly after that I began mediation. You get the point. That order was right for me.
It's a best-selling book waiting to be written.....
PS - I actually think we may be outgrowing this forum format. The search function doesn't work well and that's a shame for all the good info here. I think the CSL folks are thinking about this and working on an option. It's also interesting to note that although there are well over 3,000 members now, only a very small percentage actually post. It would be good to know if that is because the forum structure is too daunting for newbies, or if it is because most still come here but are just reading and lurking. In any case, we need better access to, and structure of the good information here. I have a feeling this is much on the minds of our CSL founders.
I told Kris that I am praying for continued abundance for the CSL organization so that this forum and all the good work Kris does will continue to prosper. Growing something like this is expensive and I send lots of love and thoughts of abundance!
