I know the topic has been touched upon a few times back in the blog, and I was given some links, but I've gotta tell you I was going through a lot, and it got lost in the chaos. So what is the deal with soy? Is it safe? What's your opinion?
I have been waiting forever for this topic to come up! I've been asking Kris to do a blog post, but she hasn't yet. (Hint Hint...) I don't know what the "big deal" is, except that it forms mucus. I don't even know why mucus is bad?
From the little bit I know, I have come to the conclusion: "Everything in moderation." I personally choose to eat an occasional tofu stirfry, soy protein shake, and eat edamame for snacks sometimes. For me I've found its benefits to outweigh the "big deal."
Goony, The more I read, the less i Likey the soy.. seems it may be in the same bucket as Dairy.. hyped and oversold as a "health food" when the truth is less than fabulous.
That said, I read that tofu, miso and soy sauce or Braggs are ok in moderate amounts. It is soy milk and isoflavines that have my guard up.
Anyone else?
BTW there are entire books on how BAD it is for you!
love ya
deb
We did chat a bit about soy on Kris' blog, but it was probably about six months ago if I remember correctly -please don't hold me to that. Soy is mucus-forming, but the kind that gets stuck to your intestines (mucoid plaque), not the snotty, cold-like kind. Like Deb says, there are books on it, I know Natalia Rose has a chapter in her book. Anyway, I'm certainly NOT the expert, (I know Dr. Bav could discuss this with you if she's around) but I do know that soy and things soy-based will affect synthetic thyroid hormones in a negative way. So, I avoid it at all costs. I can only speak for myself, not sure if that helps you or not!
This is from Natailia Rose in The Raw Food Detox Diet: "Soy has received a huge amount of press over the last decade. It has been touted as nothing short of a miracle food. Before you slurp back a glass of soy milk in lieu of another mainstream beverage, consider this: soy is the most mucus-forming plant food on the planet. The form of mucus it creates is called mucoid mattter - not to be confused with mucus membrane. This mucus is a sticky, sludge-like substance that holds up the body's flow and productivity. It accumulates and creates respiratory distress in asthmatics, creates common digestive problems like IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), and, by slowing down the body's digestion and ciculation systems, ultimately triggers weight gaini and premature aging."
Oops...reading my daughter's gossip magazines again....What I should have said was...thank you, for teaching us the errors of our way and righting the path by providing the utmost in knowledge on the relevant issues of great importance to the people of this lovely community!! (better?) LOLOL - have a great day! ; )
Great video Huggy! I think I'm more of a visual/audio learner, which is why I like your links so much. I'm not lazy, I do read, but I tend to zone out while reading and not get all the information because of that.
Thanks Clint for that video, that was very informative. I'm not buying soy milk anymore. I just have to say though, wasn't that a weird way to start the interview when he commented on her shoes?! Wha??? Awkward!
Thanks for the video Clint. Maybe it would be a good idea to put it in the video section with the SOY video I posted from Dr. Mercola? That way a wider group of folks could benefit & learn & have multiple perspectives.
I woulda posted the Mercola Soy video here, but I thought more folks might see it in the video section AND I didn't know how to get it into the post. Do I just put in the "embed" html into the LINK button? Thanks.
And I agree, videos are great for learning...it seems like you can convey a lot in in a little bit of time & it just seems to sink in better for me....I think the visual & auditory dimensions create greater associations in my mind to remember!.
