I just went out today and bought a Breville.....and now I am home with a fridge full of God's food....lettuce, kale, celery, apples, kiwi etc. I have no idea what to do. What is a good way to start?
I am in the same boat as you are - a total novice at the juicing business. Kris has a demonstration of juicing on her Crazy Sexy Cancer dvd with all the extras in part 2. It was very helpful to see it done. I believe her juicer is a Breville as well so if you can check out her demonstration, it would be really easy for you. Now I will wait for the replies from all the long-time juicing mavens out there!

Hey Jennifer! I have a Breville too, and LOVE it! The best part is that you don't really have to chop anything up before juicing--just throw it all in there and enjoy! If you've never juiced before, I would start off with something simple- maybe celery, apple, carrot? Then once you're comfortable with that, experiment with all sorts of green combinations. Throw in some kale, cucumber, spinach, etc....Right now I'm in love with beets. I tend to like my juices on the sweeter side, so if it's not sweet enough, I'll add a touch of raw honey. Hope this helps! xx
good job with starting the juicing! i have been juicing every day now for 4 months and i feel so clear, energetic and happy!!
if it's just one of you - try this:
half of a celery head
1cucumber
1 handful kale
1 apple
half of a lemon
i do this receipe most days. sometimes i switch out the apple for a carrot or beet. also, i do broccoli stems if i have it left over. you can do spinach too. it's beautifully green and tastes great!
let us know how it goes. i know it is best to juice, drink right away and wait a half hour before eating.
That sounds great (although I may have to give the celery a miss - does the celery taste come through?). I know I will have to add the fruit to begin with but I can hardly wait to start!

I just had my first juicing a couple of months ago. It started off with cucumber, celery, romaine, 1 apple and 1 lemon. It eased me into the green juice because it still had a friut flavor. After that you get to try different things out. Now I do add kale and broccoli stalks, but I know some people say kale hurts their tummy so you may need to build up to it. Good luck and happy juicing!!!
I have been juicing for a few weeks now and the results are wonderful and immediate. I find that I can tolerate the taste of anything, but I need to keep it simple to avoid a gut-bomb;-) So I limit my juices to 3 ingredients per juice. I usually use 2 main ones and one 'garnish.' Examples are: carrot, apple and some parsley. Or on a 'green' day-cucumber, kale and some sprouts. Yummy!!! I usually put something on top too, I favor turmeric on the green juices and cinnamon on the carrot/apple, but I switch it up with ginger and nutmeg too, the best part is, go with how you feel!
Cheers,
erin
Yay! Congratulations! I remember when I went out and got my Breville just a few months ago... I had my mom with me and she instantly thought something was "wrong" with me. She just couldn't believe that I might want to try and be healthier! lol My favorite first drink was carrots, celery and an apple. The first time I drank it I was amazed at how fresh and delicious it was... and now I've been experimenting with tomatoes, kale, lemons, ginger... it's pretty easy to come up with new combinations once you get going. Good luck and enjoy!
I am getting a Brevill this weekend so I can do the fast on teh 15th, does anyone have a recommendation on which one they bought and why...I think the metal inside would be better when gobbling hard veggies but does anyone have experience that can clarify this too?
I had the Compact juicer which worked really well with all sorts of veggies, and was the perfect size if you don't want something that takes up the whole counter. But I gave it away last month to someone who really needed it. I tried looking for a replacement, and now I can't find it anywhere! The Ikon model (5 speed) I've seen and it seems to work very, but costs twice as much. I was so tempted to get it. It's a good company and I trust them to make good juicers.
Hello Jennifer. All of these comments are so Right On! If you are new try just juicing a little kale, romaine, apple and cucumber. I have a Breville juicer. One thing to know about the Breville......it likes to be handled gently. Just ease the pestle thing down gently. Don't slam it down. The Breville is VERY powerful and will try to walk off the counter if overloaded! I learned this the hard way. It does not like mango! Otherwise, it is great! Always remember to clean the filter basket right after juicing.
Start with just a few ingredients to get used to it, then add something different now and then. I have found a few good (and a few bad) combinations just through trial and error. Juice a cucumber last -- it seems to push more stuff out. And if the pulp seems moist, scoop it up and put it back in again. Sometimes I get an extra 1/4 - 1/2 cup of juice from the pulp.
There are some great recipes online too. Just google it.
Remember to make delicious veggie stock with the pulp... and compost it when you are done!
Hi Lisa, I love the Breville. Great tip about re-juicing the pulp. I have to add a cautionary p.s. to that. When you take out some pulp to re-juice, MAKE SURE YOU PUT THE PULP CATCHER BACK BEFORE TURNING ON THE JUICER AGAIN.
As you may have guessed, I did forget to do just that and the results were pretty funny and extremely messy. Peace, Liz
