My new Needak rebounder arrived a few days ago and I love it! However, I have really high arches on my feet and found after using it the first couple of times that my feet really hurt afterwards. It starts in the ball of my right foot and moves down the arch.
I was rebounding barefoot at first and then tried athletic shoes but it still hurts. Has anyone found a shoe that is particularly good for this?
I was actually a little sore when I first started rebounding--in my knees mostly. I just cut back, then built up gradually on the amount that I was jumping. I think I only increased by like 5 min a week at first. I just figured, I have cancer, it's OK to UNDER-do it (instead of overdoing it like I always did) for a change. Worked pretty good, I don't get sore anywhere anymore. I have freakishly high arches too.
Kris,
I would also recommend you get sneakers that support high arches (best to go to a running store or such who have a good deal of knowledge of brands/sneaker types and can fit your properly) and stretch your calf muscles out well before and after the exercise....perhaps mobilize your arch a little too on a book or block of wood. It sounds like you are getting something called plantar fascitis from this. 'stasia
Thanks for all the great advice! Erin is right - I probably overdid it at first. My second day on it, I did 20 minutes and then was back on it later in the day again. It's just so much fun that I find myself being drawn to it often.
Also, it did irritate my right knee, which has bothered me off and on for years. Since it's my right foot that bothers me also, maybe that's all related...
Stretching is also a great idea and I'll start doing that before and afterwards.
Teddy - where can I get dance sneaks and are they good for a high arch?
Kris,
The dance shoes may actually be more irritating as they may exaggerate the arch. High arches are poor shock absorbers so I would recommend a shoe that will provide you with greater shock absorption....this would be why your arches could be getting irritated as the fascia is more taut and being strained during the jumping on the rebounder. Dance shoes (which I have) should really be kept for practicing dance.....you need something to handle the the higher impact and unstable surface of the rebounder. If you would still like to try them.....you can go to dance studios in your area...they will usually let you know where to buy shoes.....or order online from dancesupply.com. Also, you are right...if your foot is not handling the rebounder properly , it can and usually will affect joints higher up.
There's a really good athletic shoe store in Boulder and I'm there often so I will talk to them about a good shoe for rebounding. In the meantime, even the athletic shoe I wear now seems to work much better than going barefoot. Thanks for your help, everyone - I really appreciate it!
I have high arches and am way overfat for my tiny foot bones and I love them. (lots of weight comin down on the rebounder:) But I think it's a person to person thing. It seems like in shoes that are suppose to have great arch support it kills the balls of my feet, dance shoes feels like barefoot only supported enough that I don't hurt. That's just me:)
I've got some advice as I ran into this same problem when I started rebounding, I'm an overpronater (my feet roll in). My fabulous rebounding instructor gave me the following:
1. Get cross-training athletic shoes as opposed to running shoes. They are firmer and give more support to the middle of your foot.
2. Get a tennis ball and rub the hell out of your arches after you rebound. It works!
The good new is the more you rebound the stronger your feet become, the less it hurts. Enjoy!
