My Crazy Sexy Life

Hi ya'll! My boyfriend had his 2nd chemo infusion this past week and he is having severe GI symptoms. One of the major side effects he is getting is defecating what feels like acid because it burns so much. He is in so much pain...he says it feels like someone is jamming scissors up his anus (i'm sorry to be so descriptive but just so you know to what extent!). One of the drugs he is taking is Taxotere. I am wondering if anyone has had this? The only thing we can find online is "find comfort around your loved ones". Please help.

hi melanie - i had taxotere and it definitely messed up my stomach. does he have hemorrhoids? caused by either diarrhea and too much wiping or by hard bowel movements and too much pushing. . . they can cause some crazy pain in and around your anus?? he needs to call the oncologist for some sort of remedy.

best of luck and i hope he feels better soon.

Thank you for your response, Marla. He does not have hemorrhoids, diarrhea, or hard bowel movement. He definitely has pain in his rectum and what feels to him is like acid being placed on cuts. How did you deal? It is so painful that he starts trembling walking to the bathroom..

hey melanie,

i didn't have the same exact same situation, but it was similar- while undergoing chemo, i, like most people, became EXTREMELY constipated. when i actually was able to go, it felt like i was giving birth to a large boulder. needless to say, it was very painful during and after....sometimes i would have to sit on a heating pad for the rest of the day. :) but what would always help me when i was in pain was to take a nice hot bath. i know that's not always an option, esp. when you're not at home, but i found that baths helped soothe the burning, and helped me relax after those traumatic experiences in the bathroom. :) hope that helps a little.

My mom just finished chemo and she too would get really constipated. I can't say she complained of burning though. For the constipation her oncologist told her to take senna. It worked for her very well sometimes a little too well if you know what I mean. I'm so sorry to hear about your bf. That has gotta be so hard. I'm assuming he is drinking lots of water. Also flax oil will help soften things up and help it along. My friends baby did not have a bowel movement for a week and she gave her flax oil in a dropper and she went that night. HTH.

When I told my oncologist that I felt like someone was pouring acid down my entire digestive system, she put me on protonix and it worked like a charm. No side effects from the protonix. It made a huge difference -- the difference from being doubled over with cramps to watching my son's baseball game.
I was on Taxotere and 2 others, as well.

When I have anal distress;) I use a handy little thing called "sunbreeze" from the Sunrider herb company. I tell you what, hemmroids, anal fissures, you name it, the sunbreeze works like you wouldn't believe. It does burn a little going on, but within a minute, there is serious relief. Also, I found "Nelson's Hemmroid Creme" when I had my baby. It's natural and soothing and has a long applicator, so if the pain is hard to get to, it works really well. If I have runny acidic poo, I add a little fiber supplement "Fibergy" or "Intestinal Tone" with some aloe vera juice and it seems to soak up the acids and move them through a little less painfully. Hope it helps.

I had a bad experience with taxotere at both ends of my GI tube. At the rear end, not only the pain during defecation, but the itch in between (craaaaaaaaaaazyyyyyy). My mouth was severaly sored, very painful and total lack of taste. The doctor reduced the dose several times until he decided to change to another drug. Sometimes the remedy is worse than the disease.
I know some people taking taxotere don't have side effects at all. Everybody is different.
I recommend you to talk with your doctor as soon as you can.

Hi Melanie
The first chemo that I had was Taxotere. Even though I didn't feel as sick. I would get horrific cramps and yes... days of Diarrhea. I thought I was pooping glass ( sorry there is no classy way to explain it). I found out on my second round (after finishing 80 percent of the bag) that I was allergic to it. I couldn't breathe..I got hot and felt like I was going to pass out. The Dr then changed me to Cisplatin.
My only advice would be to drink a ton of Water. Tell him to flush his kidneys out and drink, drink, drink!
Stock up on some baby wipes & keep them in the fridge...they feel soothing.
Good luck

i didn't take taxotere but when i ran into similiar problems they gave me a tube of Dubacaine which helped bigtime in soothing the area.

You can also get prescription "Tucks medicated moist wipes" with added lidocane to numb the area. I had a BAD reaction to a prescription in college and about died from hives on the inside and outside of my body and I tell you, I had them EVERYWHERE. No exceptions were made for my backside. Those tucks saved me from passing out from the pain after going to the bathroom.

I am on taxotere, and with every dose, I have a really raw GI tract. Kicks in about day 6. Mouth is tender, feels "gravely". The other end is also GI tissue, and gets raw as well. Diahhrea is guaranteed day 6. Maria mentioned Protonix, which is an acid reducer. I just started it and this dose was better. (Not as much acid passing through to irritate those delicate tissues). Add some ointment on the outside and the next dose should be better!

We MUST speak up to our docs about side effects!!! They cant help us if we dont tell them what we're going though!

Blessings!
