My Crazy Sexy Life

Good morning and Happy Friday the 13th everyone!! Earlier this morning I read two articles on TIME.com and it has sparked something awesome in me.

Here are the articles:

and

Go ahead and read them… I’ll wait…

*hums a song*

We’re all the time talking about removing the toxins and extra junk from our fabulous bods, but do we need so much stuff in our houses, apartments, or caves?

I am guilty of having too much stuff. When a friend says to you, “Austin, when did you get all this stuff? The last time I helped you move there was nothing like this!!!” you know there is something seriously wrong!

Starting this very weekend I am on a journey to reduce my stuff. The only safe items at this moment are my clothes, books, and DVDs. All of this extra stuff that I’ve managed to collect over the years – regardless of sentimentality is at risk! This is something I’ve been thinking about doing for a while now, but these two articles have really inspired me!

What about you? What will you do?

Haha Austin, that's hilarious. And, I love the picture - haha

Another thing I noticed when getting rid of stuff is that I've never second guessed it once it was gone. I never thought at a later date, "Oh, I wish I didn't give that away." Instead, I typically forget I ever had it! Amazing how the mind works in that way :)

LOL, great isn't it?

I've always been the type to discard everything without regard of any thought/emotion/sentimentality/etc. This obviously changed after my mom died for some reason. I guess I feel that all this stuff is something I can hold on to without fear of losing...(save for earthquake, tornado, fire.. you know all the fun stuff in life.).

Great caesars ghost! I think I'm on to something with that... I'm going to have to ponder on that for a while.

Well can I just say that as a home educator (UK version of home schooler) of some 8 years, clutter is a major problem, so if you're already thinking about it before you have children you're on the right track I'd say! Good luck with it :-)

Austin - I know we never know how clutter gets that heavy around you but it does. I remember watching in Oprah that she keeps asking the same quesiton.---"What were you thinking when you bought this"----. And lately there was a guy (also in Oprah) that is expert in clutter that always says...--"if you buy one thing and get it inside your house, one thing needs to leave your house"...--, in other words I guess YES we need to learn how to live with 100 things only. I believe it is a good practice and I am trying real hard to follow it (no success yet ha-ha) ...-"one thing IN another thing OUT.

Hope it helps, Love ANA

have moved at least 5 times and still have a lot of stuff.

Ana, I know what you mean! Three years ago when I moved it required nothing but a truck and a trailer behind it. When I moved in January of this year, I had to hire a moving company! Never again!

Last year for lent I gave away all of my possessions except the bare necessities. It was amazing. I kept only what I needed: a futon and bedding, dishes, a few mementos, photos, my grandmother's wedding ring, a few clothes and shoes, yoga mat, hair dryer, alarm clock, books, and stereo.
My little studio apartment is now my little zen den.
I think I DO only own 100 things.

Over the past week I have donated HUNDREDS of books to my library! Every day when I go to pick my daughter up from work at Dunkin Donuts, I pack a large box of books from my house & go to the library with them for their sales area. They sell them for .25 ea. I also give them CDs & DVDs.

This was prompted by me feeling much better than usual these past few weeks, and that because of that we are having a birthday party for my daughter soon & need to clean & clear the house!

All of the stuff weighs me down! When you clear out all of the unneccesary stuff you can really appreciate what you keep so much more. It just creates a calmer, more peaceful home. I am continuing with this & I LOVE it!

It's funny, the video about stuff and bringing it with you everywhere. I am living with a family in Mexico for four months, and naturally I brought a large suitcase full of clothes. The first thing the woman said to me was, "What a big suitcase." I didn't even think that it wouldn't fit anywhere. Now it's sitting in their hallway, because the room I have is small. But the small room has made me think about all my stuff at home and what things I've wanted while I was here and the things I haven't even thought about. I have a feeling when I go home there will be a huge purge coming on...and I usually purge my things once or twice a year.

I find myself complaining all the time about all the crap in the house. But most of it is my kids stuff. Kids come with an enormous amount of STUFF! I mean it's everywhere. When we first moved into this house, my oldest son was 3 months old. The house was empty. 9 years later and another baby, and there are toys everywhere. No room is safe. It's not even me buying all this stuff. They get it for birthdays, and Christmas and Easter. It's hard to declutter a house with young kids living in it. Sometimes I long for the days when they are grown and I can have my house back, but for now I'm trying to cherish them and there stuff, even after I step on one of their toys for the hundreth time!
