My Crazy Sexy Life

O.K. Let me start off by saying I hate to come across like I am hocking stuff, but here it goes...

My name is Ryan Armbrust. In December of 2006 I was diagnosed with stage IV Hodgkin's Lymphoma. I went through 10 months of chemo, good times, and finally had a clean PET Scan October 1st 2007.

While taking time off from my day job I created an online t-shirt shop, http://www.chucklenutshirts.com

I have a section that is nothing but off-color cancer shirts and such. There are enough "Feel Good" cancer shirts out there, I wanted to offer something more edgy and hip for the "Hipster" cancer patient. Currently my best seller reads, "Hey Cancer, you picked the wrong Bitch".

I am donating a portion of each sale to different Cancer related charities. I am trying to spread the word about my cancer shirts. The more sales I can make, the more money I can donate.

I am not the type of person to sit back and take life as it comes. I figure, if things are out of my control, I am not going to worry, instead, I am going to have fun with it. I hope others do the same.

Best,
Ryan Armbrust

Ryan -

I love your shirts and your humor. Congrats on beating cancer. Survivorship is a good place to be - and it can be freeing and empowering. I hope to be back there again soon.

I'm just starting my chemo treatments for my 2nd round of breast cancer. I've always dealt with this with a good dose of irreverant humor. I have 2 young kids and want to make it as non-scary as possible. So, they will help me shave my head in the next day or so. And, I've told them when it starts growing back we can dye it any color they want.

I am curious how your experience with CafePress has been. I found them a while back and wanted to make my own shop for some crazy kids shirts, but have been putting it off.

I'm also working on a collection of humorous stories about cancer. My sister (also a 2 time survivor) and I would like to publish it some day. Of course, it will probably be more of a cathartic project for us than anything else. But if our craziness can help anyone else feel better, that would be awesome also.

Hey Andrea,

I would check out Blurb.com for your publishing ideas, they are great. I am also a photographer and use them for all my print books.

Hang in there.

Best,
Ryan

I've come across your shirts before. It's good stuff! I actually make sarcastic magnets about cancer. I've been too tired to make them lately but they are sure fun.

Your shirts are great! I hope everybody takes a look at them.

I just love your shirts! I have the "cancer can kiss my ass" sweatshirt and am getting ready to order chemosabe (that just cracks me up!). People look a little shocked when I wear these or my F!@K Cancer hat....geeze, like we should be POLITE about it?!
Thanks for adding some humor and visibility to our fight.
You rock!

WOW, I knew they were selling well, but to hear about people having them is still pretty cool.

Thanks Chris!

Hey fellow Looavillian
I dont live there now but still call it home. Checking out your site made me homesick, especially this time of year. I miss going to Churchill Downs. I knew when I saw the horses, you must be a Kentucky boy. Do you get to the races much? I grew up in the Highlands and we would go to the track all the time.
Your pics are beautiful. And I love the t'shirts. Laughter is great medicine, isn't it?
I like your attitude. Keep it up.

Hey Belinda!

Yes, I love going to the track. I am a photojournalist here in Louisville. Every year I have full press credentials for the Derby Fest and Churchill Downs. Last year I shot Derby & the Oaks days after getting chemo. Talk about fun. Being in the infield with 30 pounds of camera equipment all chemoed up.

I live in Clifton, right next to the Highlands.

I love me some Louisville!

Folks, about the only thing funnier than Ryan's shirts is Ryan himself.

Um, I did mean that as a compliment.

I'll post a photo of moi wearing my favorite Chucklenut Shirt soon. But since the topic at hand is humor, I can't resist sharing a favorite cancer cartoon. Most people who don't have cancer cringe when they see it...which makes it funnier to me.
