Ok so I am a vegetarian and want to go vegan. My biggest issue....milk! Milk is in so much I eat, I think in most things I can go without, but not yogurt! I am not a huge soy fan. I drink almond milk not soy. Isn't kefir milk based? I really want to go vegan, but how can I substitute my morning milk based yogurt routine. Aren't the live probiotics in yogurt good for me?
Hey Sarah,
yes Kefir is milk treated with kefir cultures.....just a bit different than yogurt cultures and it's pro-biotic. These (pro-biotics) are good for you but then again if you are eating a broad based vegan diet .....you don't necessarily need the kefir or yogurt....or you could just take a daily supplement like acidophilous. I don't know of any other options to milk yogurts other than the soy yogurt but some others may chime in with some alternatives for you. Meantime....since you are transitioning....maybe let the yogurt be the one thing you allow yourself at least for now.....sometimes trying to cut it all out at once isn't so good for your mind or your body.
jen, that sounds interesting.....can you find that at WF?
Also Sarah...there seems to be some cereals and vegan snack bars that are now adding probiotics. I know of one snack bar from Jake's Unbaked brand. If you can find a cereal with probiotics and some good nut milk ....that might be a good compromise :)
Those are some awesome options. I knew if I asked I would get the right answers! I love this sight! Its like the myspace of holisitic websites! Thanks to Kris!
This is a delicious, smooth, creamy, probiotic-rich yogurt that is Raw and Vegan!!! YAY! It’s a wonderful breakfast or snack for you and your family.
2 cups young Thai coconut meat
2/3 cup young Thai coconut water
contents of 2 capsules of probiotic powder
3/4 cup strawberries (or any other berries)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
1 tablespoon raw agave nectar (optional)
Blend the coconut meat and water together until creamy and smooth. Empty the contents of the probiotic capsules into the blender and blend briefly. Transfer the mixture to a quart size glass mason jar with the lid and allow to ferment at room temperature for 12-16 hours. Then, blend the yogurt together with the strawberries (and optional vanilla and agave). Creamy Raw Vegan Strawberry Yogurt will stay fresh when stored in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days. Enjoy!
Kefir generally is made with cultured milk & the probiotics in it can be helpful for your intestines. There are unfortunately a number of reasons why milk & dairy products are not conducive to good health for a number of people.
However, kefir can be made with coconut water & therefore help with some of the same healthy bacteria benefits, while still being vegan. Kristen's recipe & what Jennifer mentioned regarding Coconut Kefir starter kit on BodyEcology are good pointers in that direction. This will help satisfy both a desire to be healthy and to do it in a vegan way.
Additionally, raw fermented saurkraut is another, healthy, delicious vegan way to get healthy probiotic bacteria into your gut.
hey, i'm vegan (i'm on a super-restrictive low-residue diet at the moment tho)... anyway, there is also rice based non-dairy yogurt. have you looked into that?
