My Crazy Sexy Life

So I was in the ER with my daughter today because she was having abdominal pain.. (she's fine) and the doc taking care of her told us that he is hesitant to do a CT on any child unless it is absolutely necessary because of the high amounts of radiation that the scanner emits-- apparently 50 times that of a regular x-ray! He said that there has been a strong link found between a child's exposure to this radiation and cancer later in life. I am a nurse & I had never heard this, so I assume it is not general knowledge & wanted to pass it along. I think the higher risk with children is due to the fact that their little bodies are growing so fast & their cells are dividing, so although there is also risk to adults, the risk is MUCH greater for our little ones. I just wanted to pass it along so everyone was aware!

The author of "The Secret History of the War on Cancer" talked about this in her book. I was very freaked out about this since my son, who is 2 1/2, has hydronephrosis in his kidneys and had his first CT when he was 2 weeks old, and then again when he was 12 months. No doctor ever mentioned this to me as we were preparing for his tests. I had to hear an interview with the author on NPR!

Hi Christine,
I didn't realise this wasn't general knowledge. I have a back condition called spondylolisthesis that really developed when I was about 12years old. I had every scan under the sun done on me, from CT to radioactive dye injections, to figure out what was wrong. Before I had my main scans (the big scary ones, expecially for kids) they told my mum, right infront of me, that this may affect me later on in life, for example with reproduction. From that age, because of my back and other numerous issues, I've had at least one x-ray or scan per year, if not more. I'm now 23. I think the heath system really needs to put forth the dangers of such scans. I've not had cancer, but I've had one scare and I also have the possiblilty of breast cancer due to family genetics. I really pray that I don't get any form of cancer but it's very hard to know my future, expecially with the past I've had.
It's just extrememly surprising to know that this isn't common knowledge...
