My Crazy Sexy Life

Is it the air from the blending (I've got a Vitamix)? Green smoothies--either with fruit or without--make me feel like I'm swallowing air, and within minutes, my guts are making the weirdest noises, like stuff's going around corners on squealing tires, like indoor farts. And I feel sort of oddly bloated, and hungry within half an hour.

So . . . should I be adjusting my blender speed? Is this a sugar thing? (Watermelon makes me feel much the same way.) A food-combining issue? (Berries, half a banana and greens is a favorite of mine.)

Having lots of sugar/carb issues in general. Can't seem to stay off this stuff in the afternoons, but that's a whole nother subject . . .

It just may be your body's way of adjusting to your new lifestyle. As you eat more raw and living foods, juicing, green smoothies, etc. and less meat, dairy, and processed foods, toxins are being churned up and need to be eliminated by the body. Have you considered enemas or colonics? This will help your body rid itself of the stored toxins.
Additionally, it could be a food combining issue for you. I always say one should listen to one's own body and make changes accordingly. Perhaps you could try less fruits in your smoothie and add sweet vegetables instead. Here's one you can try:
1/2 avocado
1/2 green apple
2 oz coconut water
1/4 cucumber
3 mini yellow bell peppers or 1/2 regular sized
1/4 yellow squash
1 large handful spinach
2 tbsp. hemp seeds
stevia to taste
Blend first 3 ingredients until smooth. Add remaining ingredients and blend until smooth. Garnish with coconut flakes

I hope that helps.

anne,
I have some of these issues too.....I can eat all the veggies and fruit whole as a salad or something and not have the same bloaty feeling. I definitely think there is some issue to all the air that gets incorporated in as you blend (I don't even have a powerful vitamix). I am trying to keep the blending to low speed and to a minimum.. Cut your stuff up before putting it in the blender so it's easier to blend and blend slow and not for too long. then try drinking with a straw too instead of just from the cup (you take in more air that way)...or use a spoon.
Let me know if this helps.....I am trying this out for myself as well.

Great ideas, Anastasia. Also make sure you're chewing your smoothie. I know....it sounds bizarre, but chewing actually allows the digestive enzymes in your saliva begin to break down the sugars so it's easier to digest.
I top my smoothies with coconut flakes so it feels like I have something to chew on. Then chew the smoothie until it begins to taste sweet in your mouth, then swallow.
