My Crazy Sexy Life

So, my Mystery Abdominal Disease (here on out to be referred to as MAD) is still a mystery...The MRI showed a cyst on my right ovary, but that didn't explain most of my symptoms. I had ultrasounds done on Monday (both inside and out. Good times.) and they showed the cyst as well, but everything else looked alright.

I just got to my parents house in Merced, CA for an 8 day rest, and then when I get back up to Seattle I'm having an upper endoscopy...Anyone had one? I hear they aren't pleasant...

I want to figure out what this stupid thing is, because I can't live my life feeling like this!!!

Upper endoscopy? I think I've had one of those. I've had SO many tests, though that I can't even remember them all.

Wait, is that the one down your throat?

Yup. They put you out and stick a camera down your throat.

I had that done 3-4 years ago. It wasn't bad at all...the drugs they give you to put you out are gooooood, and you won't remember any of it, if your experience is anything like mine. There was no pain or anything afterwards.

I remember mine. It wasn't that fun but it is over very quickly and next thing you know, it's done. I was put out and only have snippets of memory from it.

I had a colonoscopy at the same time. I remember thinking, that part of it wasn't so bad. Now that I look back, it's kind of funny.

I'm sure it will all go well for you. I really hope they find what is ailing you so you can begin to feel better. Good luck!

Hi Stephanie,

Since December I have also had MAD (haha).

What are some of your symptoms? Do you have endometriosis or IBS? I have both so I might be able to help.

No mention of endometriosis or IBS. I have a cyst on my right ovary, but that's not causing the majority of my symptoms. A lot of nausea, bloating/fullness, pain...

I pretty much have the same thing. I had an upper GI in March and although my gastro doctor didn't "see" anything he did a biopsy to rule out H.Pylori. That came back negative but he said that I do have gastritis which is an inflammation of the stomach lining possibly caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatories. He didn't offer me much help other than to say "I hope you feel better"...so I went to the health food store and got a book called "Renew Your Life". It is a great book on the digestive sytem and it is a glossy, picture book so its not just reading. Since then I have starting doing alot of things they recommend and I am feeling so much better!

Please don't worry about the Upper GI. As soon as you get the IV meds....you are pretty much out and the next thing you know you are in the recovery room and they say you're all done. Some words of advice...try to make an early appointment because you can't have anything to eat or drink past midnight the night before. My appointment was at noon and I was so thirsty I could barely stand it.

Good luck with you appointment and really try to get that book. It has really helped me :)

Hi Stephanie.

I'd just like to way in if I can. I suffer from endometriosis and cysts. Cysts actually do cause a lot of abdominal bloating/fullness nausea and pain. Endometriosis causes those same symptoms and also neausea. Have you spoken to your doctor about it possibly being endo? The only way to know for sure is via laparoscopy. A surgery through your belly button to see inside your abdomen. But if you do have an ovarian cyst, believe me they cause a lot of pain, and bloating and fullness and nausea. I just had surgery because of cysts. Did your doctor mention if it was a simple or complex cyst?

Hmmm I'll ask my GI next time I see her.

I really appreciate all of the support...I don't feel quite so alone!

Me too...I have probable endo (won't know for sure until surgery), ovarian cysts, as well as uterine fibroids. I am having surgery next week, as a matter of fact, to remove it all. My GI symptoms/bloating/pain etc were, I now believe, really a result of all of these matters. I was complaining of pain, bloating, and heartburn. I also was having recurrent UTI as a result of fibroids but had no idea I even had fibroids at the time. This was around 5 years ago. My doctor said there could be no correlation between all my symptoms. Boy was he wrong. A couple of years later I finally started to unravel what had been wrong with me all along.

It's good that you've already had an internal ultrasound done...they seem to be much more on top of finding out what's wrong than my initial doc was. I'd be sure to see a gynecologist though, if you haven't already (you probably have), in addition to a GI specialist.

No, I haven't seen a gyno...Hmm, maybe I'll add that onto my list of VIPs to see.

Stephanie,

You cannot see a GI doctor for an ovarian cyst. You need to see a gyno. That is there area of expertise. I don't understand why your GI doctor didn't refer you to a Gyno? You have all the symptoms that an ovarian cyst causes. I would hate to see you have a surgery to put a tube down your throught for something that seems very apparent to me. I've struggled with ovarian cysts for years. Endo too. I don't know if you have endo, but just the fact that you have the cyst says a lot. Endo and cysts go hand in hand. You need to find out what type of cyst you have. The doctor should be able to tell you just by looking at the ultrasound. Simple cysts are common and can be helped with natural progesterone or bc pills. Complex cysts are more serious. They contain solid and liquid matter. Both can cause major bloating, pain, nausea. They can twist the ovary and cut off the blood supply. They can rupture causing extreme pain and swelling and scar tissue. All you have to do is a quick google on ovarian cysts to see that your symptoms match and you've already been told you have one. You may want to reconsider the gastro surgery until you rule out this being a gynocological issue. That's just my oppinion anyway. I would hate to see you have an unnessesary surgery.
