Using a Neti Pot is another wonderful Ayurvedic practice to add to your daily life. Here is a video on how to use a neti pot.
Make sure you use non-iodized salt! I use salt that is made specifically for a neti pot. The salt and pots are easy to find at health food stores and even pharmacies! A nasal wash helps reduce allergies, clear your nasal passages for easy breathing (great for meditation and yoga!), soothes nasal passages, and clears away dust, pollen, and pollutants.

It still hurt, but hurt less the lower I hung my head. I split one pot through 2 nostrils and will keep trying. It' really kills. Feels like getting water up your nose in the pool and then a shock goes right up into my brain.
How are you breathing? Jenny was right on when she said to breathe through your mouth! Thats the only other reason I can think of other than the angle of your head. Good luck!
mouth open. But I will pay closer attention. Odd, after not doing it for a month or so, it hurt but then since finishing, my nose has been constantly running. I must've hit something up there.
It took me a while to get used to it, but I have been doing nasal rinsing for a few years now. I mostly do it when I'm sick and when I feel like my allergies are acting up. It is a great tool!
This looks scary, but maybe just what I need. I have had nasal congestion everyday since I was a kid. I go through sooo much kleenox! Yummy!
So you're basically just pouring the water in one nostril and it comes out the other side? I didn't know our nasal passages worked like that. Do you have to inhale as you do it? How do you not choke on the water?
Hi Lauren,
As far as I know, the water travels through the sinus cavity, but don't quote me on that! You breathe normally through your mouth the whole time. I think the neti will be a huge help to you!
xo,
Sundari:)
Hi Sundari. Through my extensive study of anatomy I have learned that the water cannot enter the sinus cavity since the passages are so small. But the pouring of the water forms a pressure/vacuum that pulls mucus (and whatever else happens to be lurking) from your sinus cavities.
I love my neti pot. All of my allergy/sinusitis patients are required to use a neti pot in between acupuncture sessions.
Thank you.
Tamara
Lauren, I thought it'd be scary, too - but it just kind of feels like when you go underwater and your nose fills up. Do not inhale through you nose...just breath through you mouth. Honestly, it does wonders for congestion and sinus headaches too. Now with spring and allergy season, I'm sure I'll be using it at least one a day! Good luck! xo Sherry
I love my neti pot. I started having major drainage from the spring pollen and I felt a sinus infection coming on, which then triggered a sore throat, etc. I used it all last week -- two times a day. I think I headed off a major head cold in a week with the neti and some major doses of apple cider vinegar and cayenne pepper. I'm now going to neti at least once or twice a week to keep things cleaned out. Good luck everyone!
