My Crazy Sexy Life

Going veg has been great on my waste line and amazing for my overall health, but not so great for my closet. With the exception of a few cool designers I'm stuck in crunchy granola-ville. However, the times they are a changing. The Green revolution has flooded the market with new sexy stylish choices. AMEN! Now let's work on the real cause of global warming and not just jump on the accessories. Yet....I WANT THE ACCESSORIES TOO. What's a girl to do?

Share your favorite fashion designers, especially vegan shoes! If I can find some vegan shoes that are cozy and lovable I will personally make you dinner. FOR REAL. :)

Also, how do you guys feel about the leather you've had since before going veg. I'm torn. I realize you all aren't veg heads but you can still chime in. I'm at the stage where if I already owned the belt I'm not gonna toss it. Is that hypocritical? I do get afraid to wear ethically touchy items on TV. I'm controversial enough!

Here are a few shoe companies to get the juices flowing...

Mink Shoes (these are HOT)
Moo Shoes
Alternative Outfitters
VegShoes

Check out my friend Jenny's company Loyale - love it!

the organic clothing/shoe stuff is so freakin expensive. I do my part for Mother Nature by buying all clothing and even shoes second hand for me and the kids. Hubby kind of does not dig it for him.. but I find cool shirts for him sometimes. I give it back to the thrift store when we are done with it.. is that green fashion/recycling?

ok, im too nervous to look at that one site because I dont think I could handle reading it.
But Kris, I know you have some fun shirts (like the one we share, "my oncologist is my homeboy")
This fantastic, always changing site
threadless.com
Is a great t-shirt site with all 100% cotton shirts.
Thats my contribution. I know its not exactly what you're looking for.
Majoring in fashion, its funny that we never hear about this stuff...

Vegan fashion is SO complicated. We can shop at Payless and get crappy shoes that aren't leather but ARE made with synthetic materials that are hard on the environment. We can buy "green" at Banana Republic and get clothes made by child slaves in India http://abcnews.go.com/WN/Story?id=3787304&page=1 (Gap is Banana Republic, in case you didn't know). We can wear cloth Mary Janes from China which are really cute, provide zero foot support, and are made under who-knows-what conditions. Ack!!

I thought my oh-so-ugly crocs were made in the USA but I see that they are almost all made in China now.

I admit I'm no longer doing vegan fashion. In the granola dept, I'm a big fan of birkenstocks. BTW, have you seen the Heidi Klum birks?? There is a vegan option there (and expensivo):

mattandnat.com has great vegan bags and purses! i have not gotten rid of my leather items either. it's hard because my leather shoes are the most comfortable and i love the look. i do feel so torn tho because i can't stand the thought of animals being killed to eat or for my clothing. the choice to not eat animals was an easy one for me. i guess my vanity is stronger than i would like it to be.

peace, love and honesty,

kelly

Thanks Kelly! I totally forgot about Matt & Nat! My mom gave me one of their purses and I love it. I'm in the exact same boat as you. Love this conversation and I think we need to post a network of cool thrift/vintage stores on the site. More and more I am convinced it's the way to go - especially because we are spending the majority of our money on food. For the occasions when I have to do a speaking gig, press or when someone else's jeans just make me look dumpy I do need resources for new stuff. Genie brings up great points too.

Eco-guilt!?!?!?!?

Hey Guys,
I feel like the slow person on the block. I haven't gotten there yet. I do shop the vintage and resale shops for almost everything. I feel it is wasteful to buy a shirt for 70 dollars when it is .99 cents on sunday and starched already .... I am now wondering about were I sit on the ethics of it all. Honestly no offense to anyone but has anyone had the thought that using what they have is repsonsible. I worry that even though I DO NOT EVER WANT another animal to die for a shoe fetish or a purse or a steak for that matter. I wonder how ethical it is to let the products that are out there ust sitting in our closets go unused and go into land fills... Many have asked me why I wear leather shoes and belts since I am a vegan..when I became a vegan it was for health reasons..... I now care so much about the plight of the animals involved that I couldn't go back.... I am land locked with the idea of what can you change in a society and what can't you? I would love to be able to shop without guilt. I do not shop often. I saw a commercial that had me thinking about this last night. Recycled bottle water and cotton shirts at walmart. PS>> I do not shop at walmart.. It is illegal in my family.. Now in my head that sent signals that first we have to consume the water as a people and then we have to consume the shirts and yes, we would be using a resourse the is filling out planet with junk but a whole cotton shirt will fall apart and can deteriorate and this new walmart shirt will be in the landfill forever.... it is backward thinking. I know that is not the kind of clothes any of us is looking for here.. but it is strange is it not? Or is it me???? I fell into the trap of buying the used and recycled plastic bags made into bags for groceries and then it started this train of thought that it just has to stop. Use paper.... Or cotton ... oh well. I do plan to check out the sights you have mentioned here. I spend most of my days in clothes that make no sense.. Three changes to make a meeting, then to clean out a storeroom the to put in a garden..

The cool stores here are the easy ones.. goodwill, salvation army.. no vintage stores..exactly for clothes but three times a year when folks are buying school clothes, winter clothes and summer clothes all the brand new things are dumped for this years brand new things..Funny it seems that I see many of the same clothes in church used over and over so everyone has found my .99 cent sunday. Keep this thread going this is fabulous. I am learning so much and hopefully I can find a shoe that is eco friendly. That indulgence is a trip to the betty for me.. But it has been 6 months since I bought a new pair of shoes. gulp.. lets not think about it.. just call me emelda.. I am in recovery for it. Ha.. trying. anyway this idea is great! Good job. callie

i LOVE your Got Rice one and Eat Your Veggies shirts.

as for shopping second hand, in austin TX the buffalo exchange is pretty decent, Blue Genie, Savers
and I used to work at a Vintage Shop called Blue Velvet and all my favorite clothes items were bought there, ya know, the hits!

HI Kris and guy's..

I recently went thru the closet and pulled out anything i had that was leather. I have a really cool motocycle jacket- out, really punky studded belt- out, REALLY cool vintage moto boots- out. Since they are leather, i wont wear them. I feel guilty and i cant do it. I have contacted a few Vintage stores in my area and asked it they would like to buy/trade with me. Since these items meant so much to me, i cant throw them in the goodwill bin. i am hoping to use the money to get a veggie replacement for each item. I have already found a strappy pair of heels to replace some leahter shoes!

Also- have found that Mervyns and Payless shoe source sell shoes made from all mad made matrial- they aint Jimmy Choos- but they work for now! AND......The PETA website has a list of lots of places to buy alternative stuff http://www.peta.org/living/alt2.asp.

MINK Shoes are fabulous. I love the "cow" went to order but a little pricey for me this month, since coming back from Austin my bank account needs replenishing... but I will treat myself next month for my birthday.

Another option is hosting a "Clothes Swap Party". Invite your friends over for a raw vegan (or whatever you like) potluck and ask everyone to bring a bag of (gently used) clothes that are just collecting dust in their closet. You're bound to find something that you like, its a great way to clean out your closet, and you can donate all the clothes that are left over!

xoxo,
Sundari

Sundari, that's exactly what I'm doing tonight! A group of friends (and friends of friends) take turns hosting "Goddess Parties" every few months ... we pick a theme (tonight's is celebrating your phenomenal self -- sharing a poem, picture, story, etc. that highlights your fabulousness), bring a delicious veggie or vegan dish and swap clothes at the end. We always have a blast! I don't know that I'll have time to clean the closet today though -- too much cleaning to do in preparation :)
