I'm not really looking for anything by writing this except to just say how much I love sugar and that it of course is the one thing I really can not have (not even fruit), which of course makes sense, but you know, I just really love it and can not seem to fully give it up. I was thinking about an episode of LA Ink where this guy who became lactose intolerant after an accident came in to the shop and he loved cheese so much that he got a tattoo of cheese saying "In Memory of Cheese". I totally understood and felt his pain. 'sniffle sniffle'.
Last year I went to see a naturopath because I could barely get off the couch to brush my teeth let alone take care of my 3 year old. It was horrible. Anyhow, she pretty quickly determined that I had candida and also took me off gluten just to see how I would react. She is convinced that at least half the population is gluten sensitive. So I went off gluten and sugar (for the candida) for a few weeks and immediately began to feel better and then completely on accident I ate flour tortillas. I was so hungry that I wasn't thinking. Soon after I got really bloated and sick to my stomach and then realized I had eaten flour and not corn tortillas. To make sure it really was the flour and not just some random stomach ache, I continued to do no gluten for a long time and then would add it in once and a while. Sure enough, turns out that whenever I eat gluten not only does my stomach not feel right but my muscles get really heavy and almost feel as though they are made of lead. No wonder I had been so exhausted! Not only did I have candida, but the gluten was a major contributor, too. And yes, gluten is in a lot of different foods. You have to read labels. It's much easier to just eat your veggies and rice than to read all those labels. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. I also believe someone started a group here for that, too.
Thanks for sharing that. I cannot imagine how exhausted you were. I'm working on finding the perfect match for me with food. I'm going to start reading labels for gluten. Are there other names for gluten (like sugar had a billion names!) ? Thank you, Kelly
Hi Kelly, Gluten does have different names or hidden sources. I just started a discussion in the gluten-free group so we could all help each other figure out what those names and foods are.
Jennifer - there are many recipes for gluten free brownies out there. Check out the gluten free recipe website on our Crazy Sexy gluten-free goup.
Andy
Thanks, Andy. I've purposely kept away from finding a good gluten-free brownie recipe because I don't want the sugar!! I did however find this super duper yummy gluten-free chocolate torte at my WF that is too die for! I'm trying to wean myself off of those...

Jennifer,
Maybe let's attack it from a different direction?? It's not really "sugar" you love, it's the sweet taste, right?? So perhaps start by simply replacing your current sweet treats with those that use a more healthy sweetener, like stevia or agave. Then once you've made that hurdle, you can then start on whittling down quantity... maybe?
Just a thought of how you might reframe the predicament to make it not so painful?? There are lots of places/resources for delicious treats, some of them even raw. You can still have "sweets" in your life!!!
It's not an overnight switch for most people, so do it in your own time, in a way that fits your needs/life. It's a process, be kind and patient with yourself!!
Yes, I think making the switch to stevia is what I will do this time. I'm not sure agave works in my situation. I have candida which has gone way past just getting yeast infections. Actually, I don't even get those. My candida has infiltrated my body (wow that sounds so dramatic!) making me extremely exhausted and fog brained. I can cut it out for a few weeks and start feeling great, then I have just a little something with no reaction so then I do it again, and again, and then suddenly I start getting tired and cranky and craving it and then I'll have that last one because of course, I'm never gonna have it again you know, but that last one lasts every night for a week! I've been doing this for a year! LOL! You are right though, I have to find a 'good' sweet treat and let myself have it so I don't feel deprived.

WOW - I can totally relate to everyone's comments here, and Beth, your idea of switching to a healthier substitute makes a lot of sense. For me, is it always the "last" ice cream or the "last" cookie but as Jennifer said, the "last" one could go on forever. I know how I feel after a sugar binge, and I know how I feel when I don't have any sugar....I know what i have to do, yet it remains elusive.
I need to find out what I am missing from an emotional, spiritual perspective, so I don't keep looking for comfort through sugar.....We need to have some kind of "virtual" sugar-burying ceremony...!!

Thea - I would love to know the answer to that - and more importantly, if there IS a "once and for all" then how do we get there? I'm up for the challenge -- you?

Thea - what a great way to look at it...my family is very musical and my son plays the trombone so I am familiar with practicing and the discipline it takes. I think that is a great analogy because it really is the same as this. It does take practice and motivation; all the stuff it takes to accomplish anything worth having, right? good advice and thank you for a new perspective!
