Profile Information

About Me:: I am a testicular cancer survivor. I have been blessed to have one daughter, Caroline, who saved my life and another, Annabelle, who is a true miracle. Caroline accidentally kicked me in the groin when climbing into bed with me and my wife. This caused a pain which eventually led to me checking myself and finding a lump. My daughter Annabelle was conceived a few weeks before my radiation treatments. I always say I am the luckiest man in the world.

I am a proud supporter of the Lance Armstrong Foundation and I'M TOO YOUNG FOR THIS [i2y]. I was a delegate from NJ in the inaugural LIVESTRONG Summit in 2006. In 2007 I was one of the LAF's top fundraisers for the LIVESTORNG Challenge. I am currently serving as a 2008 LIVESTRONG Summit Steering Committee Member for the LAF which he helps with reviewing applications, advising on selecting the new delegates, outreach program and volunteering the 2008 LIVESTRONG Summit. I am also participating in the 2008 LIVESTRONG Challenge with Team DOWN ONE.

MAY is skin cancer awareness month

I was reading Henrike's Blog and found out May is skin cancer awareness month. This reminded me of a skin cancer scare I had back in April/May 2006. I was going to the dermatologist to get numerous moles removed and tested because my father was recently diagnosed with melanoma. In one visit they removed 8 or 9 off my back and shoulders. Seaside Park & Hts, NJ - 2008 MS Walk

Another disease that has impacted my life is Multiple Sclerosis. My grandmother passed away in 1980 after battling MS for many years. My mother has been living with MS for the last 8-10 years. I completely understand that they can't offer them to international participants- it is a US Foundation, after all- plus, it really helps that they'd let me room with a friend of mine who's going, too.

Yeah, Amanda is on my team and she's doing a good job raising money. It's just more of a personal endeavor for her, as she's trying to reach the RftR level.

I just applied for the Livestrong Summit. At first, I thought the financial requirements wouldn't allow me to apply. Well, they told me it would be okay to room with a friend, who's already been accepted and to pay the reduced registration fee.
So, now "all" I have to do is find a way to pay for the flight which is $1200. I know, it might not seem to be a problem to some, but since I'm unable to work at the moment and have to pay for school, this is a difficult situation. Plus, with all the rejections I got while doing fundraising for the LAF, it's not likely that I'll get sponsors. But, I'll try my best and hope it'll be enough. Everything keeps telling me I'd be a great addition to the summit, so how can I not go?

I'm a bit behind on catching up on all the blogs I'm normally reading, my grandpa just started chemo and he's 93, so it's tough for him. He has this huge tumor on his leg and we're all worried about him. We're just hoping that he won't have to suffer through too much pain. Seems like cancer really is a family tradition for us!

At 9:43pm on March 8, 2008, Joan Acello said…: got my path report and have to get the nodes out after all, notwithstanding a benign lymph node biopsy. eh, another bump on the road to recovery. but get this Brian. my "prophylactic" mastectomy on my right side turned out to be a "prophetic" mastectomy because they found a small cancer growth undetetected by all the tests there as well. phew. lifestyle, my friend, it's our new lifestyle. be well.
