I have managed to get the ibs somewhat under control and no longer get the diarhhea, due to taking calcium 600 mg. twice daily. But still have lots of bloating, stomach upset and nausea. I will try the Kombucha, have seen it at the store but wondered what it was like. Also have seen the probiotic supplements, I tried some chewable acidophilous tabs but they made me extremely bloated! I may try the pill form and see how that works. I wish you well and hope you are healing after having chemo and cancer!
I tried to join your group, but to no avail. Some of the site functions don't seem to be working well these last couple days.
I've always had IBS, which has waxed and waned over the years. It became excruciatingly horrible during the year before I was diagnosed with cancer, and the reason (as it turned out) was due to a bad case of adhesions. If your colon is all tied up in a knot, then the IBS gets worse!!
Then came the coup de grace -- chemo!! Imagine layering that all out assault on top of your sensitive digestion. This left me with some bowel issues that are MUCH too embarrassing to mention.
These days I'm OK. Can you believe it? How did I get here? For one, in my weird little idiosyncratic case, I find that garlic can cause me to have diarrhea. If I avoid it scrupulously for a long time, I can start to have a little bit. Right now I can eat a little, so that's great.
Next, I am full up to my ears with probiotics. I take a supplement (in pill form) and I drink two kombuchas a day. Kombucha contains two billion organisms of probiotics in every bottle! I was also eating a lot of plain organic yogurt, but I've been cutting back on the dairy products. I'm a big believer in probiotics for IBS.
Proof to me that it works is that I only have had my horrifying bowel issues pop up when I'm out of kombucha.
I also take one scant teaspoon a day of psyllium. If you've ever tried to take it you may know that those with IBS can really run into problems when trying to scrub out the colon. I find that if I eat really clean and never, ever take more than one (scant) teaspoon per day, it is extremely good in helping me to produce two perfect poops per day.
I do eat all whole grains, green veggies, etc. I don't at all believe in eliminating these things from your diet. In your case, if you haven't already done so, probably what you should eliminate is any form of gluten whatsoever. As you probably know, this means wheat, spelt, rye, barley, and oats. Watch out for trace amounts by reading the ingredients on what you eat! You don't need the results of the celiac test to get started on this.
When the site is working better I'm going to cut and paste this post into your IBS group site.
