Retained knowledge...well, I think it's just what's relevant right now...you would never know I knew calculus at one time & had a math minor in undergrad....I can't even remember the quadratic formula...other than it exists, & differential equations...well, I'd be dead if my life depended on remembering that! Hah!
I think it's the process stuff that's more key than the details...like how we look at the world, relate to the world & others, solve problems, etc. I'm sure you have absolutely blossomed in much of the relational stuff you're exploring now with parenting. BTW, how was your visit to Vancouver?
Neptune transit....yes, definitely can contribute to uncertainty, but on the upside, it also can bring a great sense of intuition, to navigate thru the fog of the unknown.
Two basic ways to discover this type of heritage -- the "old-fashioned" way of looking up ancestors, and the relatively new way of testing mitochondrial DNA.
I say old-fashioned in quotes because actually most genealogical work is now easily done on line, which is a hell of a lot easier than traveling around the country or the world, looking in dusty old churches and libraries.
First thing you have to do is line up the stats on the relatives you do know about. Genealogical research is most easily done if you can get back to someone born in the 19th century. This method probably will not help you find out about your great-grandmother as I'm assuming there is no birth record. But let's say you're looking up someone else. You find out your great-great grandmother was born in Detroit, Mi in 1892. You find out her birth name. You can enter this info into google, or go directly to ancestry.com. Problem with them is that they charge $$ and I find that their money practices are slightly dishonest. You can get some info from ancestry without paying, but in-depth work always requires bucks.
Anyway, if you can find your 19th century relative listed in some genealogical registry, you can work backwards from there. Before this stuff was online I visited a Mormon genealogical library in Arizona and with one gg grandmother I was able to go back for hundreds of years.
Problem is that the easiest people to trace back are those who come from the British Isles, as many of my ancestors do. Ancestry has some helpful info for those whose ancestors are not wasps, but it is harder, esp if your g grandma had no birth records. So this is where the DNA testing comes in. Mitochondrial DNA is matrilineal and so they can find out where your mother's mother's mother's mother's (etc) ancestors came from. This type of ancestor hunting was popularized by African Americans as slavery is a terrible obfuscator of family trees, but now its popularity has increased in lots of sectors. One of them is for people like us with Indian ancestry but no way to follow a paper trail.
I don't know too much about the details but there's lots of places to read about it on the internet. I recently found out that it is no longer expensive -- a mitochondrial DNA test can be had for $170! Initially it was thousands of dollars.
Let me know what you find out.
