About Me:
Had double mastectomy, done with chemo, started tamoxifen, still on herceptin til next April 09, finished with expansions, planning to go bigger than before as a sort of "f-you" to the stupid disease, waiting to reschedule silicon implants because I had to cancel the first operation on the operating table because I'm an ass. I am fearful that my wigs are better than the real hair, which has started growing in thick, a little too gray and curly on top. I'm getting sick of the wigs on general principle, however, I seriously doubt the natural look will be much of an improvement. Chemo wasn't horrendous, worked through it, missed three work days per session, spent weekend on couch, developed severe apathy and aversion to healthy food so gained ten pounds. Trying to lose it now that menopause has kicked in is a real nightmare. I'm more upset about zero pound loss at Weightwatchers this week than the postponement of my implant operation. Probably because my stupidity caused the implant operation to be cancelled (my fault) whereas my physical chemistry caused my weight loss to slow (not my fault). Horse racing fan (forgetting the 2008 Derby disaster) and equine artist; work for $$ at NBC pushing paper; 51 years old but still basically immature, never really grew out of the seventies except that I am now totally revolted by drugs. I am probably revealing too many personal identifiable details that would make people shi% their pants if they googled me and came up with this but I really don't care because I really love the people I've connected to on this site. Let the world know the truth.

Hi Tay, your jewelry has made my chemo almost not horrible! From the minute I put on your earrings after the first treatment,it never was so bad again. I'm halfway through and looking forward to the Olympics only because August 6 is my last treatment. How are you doing Tay? Thinking of you too! love,Joan

Joan,

I emailed your gmail account. But just to help you navigate the site better, in the tip top left corner of your page, there is a picture of an envelope, if you click on it, that brings you to the private message email component of the site. You can send or receive messages to other people on the site from there.

Hope that helps! :)

Hi DeeDee, so glad to hear you're on the road to recovery! The good thing about surgery is that you DO recover daily and suddenly the incremental daily improvement hits a critical mass and you are suddenly MUCH better. That's what happened to me, though my reconstruction was through implants and right after my mastectomy so not as involved as yours because I was out in three days. I will take your advice and get vitamin D3 and I will have to start wigging it by this weekend because I'm noticing that the strands are adding up and it's no longer a bad hair day but bad hair condition (there's an element of denial in the beginning I have to admit). I am bracing myself for Friday when the steroids wear off. Thank you for being there and don't worry about the initial soreness/bruising/swelling--I promise you time will make them disappear and you will look great! Give yourself six weeks to see a marked improvement! xxxo, Joan

Hi Joan. Thanks for thinking of me. Here is my latest blog that I wrote today. It will catch you up. Try not to panick about no hair. I wore a cap or a wig the entire time I went through chemo. They itch, and they can get hot, but there was no way I could go without my wig. You get used to it after a while. I even went to a stylist and had her cut it into a more attractive style. I'm still wearing my wig even though my hair is now about 1/4 inch thick. One thing I'd like to see you do is to take Vitamin D3 daily. I went to a conference and listened to a doctor and nutritionalist talk about how Vit D3 kindof engulfs breast cancer cells and keeps them from spreading. I took it during chemo and still do. I'm sorry round 1 was so hard on you. My round 1 was the worst. It's not that it's easier in round 2, but more that you know what to expect and you can tell yourself that "today" will be the worst day and tomorrow I will start feeling better. I wish you nothing but luck and strength and courage. Being positive really does help. You can do it! One step at a time! Hugs to you. DeeDee

Here is my "catch up" status:

I am finally CANCER FREE! On April 30th, I had my bilateral mastectomies and DIEP reconstruction at University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. The microvascular surgeon, the surgical oncologist, the anesthesiologists and the nursing staff were all wonderful. I was in the hospital for 7 days post-surgery. Everything seems to have gone as good as it could have. The surgery was 13 hours long. I'm still taking pain pills 2x day but really doing very well according to my surgeon. I had my first post-op visit at 9 days post-surgery. He says I look better than any of his past patients at 9 days post-surgery. That's encouraging. I take afternoon naps. I remain relaxed throughout the day. I have to take aspirin to keep my blood thin for the new blood vessel connections. I go back in another week for my second post-surgery visit. I do have a small quarter-sized area that is a little more firm than it should be on the left side of the left breast. It's an area that could continue to harden and have to be removed, OR we are hoping it softens on it's own and stays put. My belly button was a little concerning too. It was oozing and not healing over well at first. It seems to be scabbing over now. I hope it gets a good report in a week. I'm on anti-biotics to prevent infection. My breasts look pretty good although bruised and scarred. They are really firm which I'm wondering is just from the inflammation and the surgery. I hope that these will soften over time. My stomach scar is hip bone to hip bone like a tummy tuck. The stretching feels apparent at all times and the tummy is inflammed and feels like I'm about 4 months pregnant, but this will subside in a few months. Overall, I'm very happy that I chose the DIEP procedure and recovery is getting easier every day. I thank God that he sent me the DIEP option and the surgeons at UH. Given the choice, I would absolutely do this again! I'll try to keep you all up to date as the recovery process continues. Hugs, Prayers, and Light to you!!!! DeeDee
