Profile Information

About Me:: i have a rare cancer called GIST- Gastro Intestinal Stromal Tumor. i have had 2 abdominal surgeries so far to remove them and am currently on Gleevec. i was first diagnosed (first surgery too!) in april 2005 and had 15% of my stomach removed. im hoping my current mostly vegan diet helps to keep in check the 3rd tumor that has popped up.

What's your personal mission statement?: to help my friends and family realize there is life without meat and dairy!

What a long, strange trip its been.........its still weird when i think of it and every so often have to say out loud to myself "I have cancer" to remind me of my journey.

after being crazy stressed out before getting the recent results of my CT scan, what an immense relief to hear "stable with no new signs of disease" stay the course!

I just read about another GIST'er passing away, and it always depresses me a bit. i try to remind myself "thats not me and im still here and vibrant and strong and alive!" but what constantly goes through my mind when i hear of it is " how long did it take him to go from feeling fine to being critical to passing away"-that scares the shit out of me....i dont want to know -and i also dont want this to be my reason for passing away. i try to use this as a time of reflection and thank what i have..… Continue

Yes, my daughter left for college last Sat., and went to Freshman Orientation Day today. I just talked to her & she said it sucked & she is exhausted & went to bed early....she's more into actually going to classes tomorrow.
Thanks for yor compliment ont he pic. Yes, that is my most recent pic. I am losing my hair now, so cut it that short to camoflage it...my daughters are horrified and pretty mean about it, but I'm good with it. I may or may not lose all of my hair. They don't know.
I don't know if I will get to the meet up on teh 28th. That weekend is my husband's birthday & I'm not sure what plans we have yet...alo, do you have any idea what it costs??? That is a big factor for me these days.
I'm soaking up all the summer I can get too! I am also always cold..but have always been that way.
Going on a quick trip w/ family tomorrow....talk to you again soon....lots of love to you!

I have 1 daughter in college...I've just been talking about it forever :-)
She moved out Sat. & will start classes next week!
My youngest is 16 and will be a HS Junior this Fall.
I had treatment yesterday & flew back the same day! Yes! I was so happy to sleep in my own bed!

At 10:05am on May 29, 2008, Jennifer Engstler said…: what a weight off my shoulders...at least for now!! the results from my Pet Scan were good! the activity in my tumor went from a 19 to a 13- a 0 is what im shooting for, but any decrease is welcome! My doctor at MSK seemed perplexed at the change as the type of GIST i have normally doesnt respond to the drug im on. i told her about my new lifestyle and guess being a doctor she cant really say anything encouraging or discouraging it- i definitely believe it helped in making such a change!
