About Me:
Breast Cancer survivor (6 years out). Caregiver for my husband the last year and half. He's in remission from Stage IV head and neck cancer, but has been unable to recover. Now repeated aspiration pneumonia has put his life at stake. We are looking at a complete laryngectomy as the only way to stop the aspiration. Pretty scary time. In the meantime, I work full time as I'm the only income in the house and our insurance is through my job! I'm pretty stressed -- DUH! Seeing an acupuncturist and taking his Chinese herbs, praying and doing my best.

HUZZAH!

Dan's surgery went very well indeed! He did beautifully, no complications, is breathing on his own. Already alert and speaking in voice that is remarkably improved -- deep and resonant rather than weak and raspy. He's on a critical care floor where they can monitor him 24 hours a day and may even be released as soon as tomorrow. In a week they'll test for aspiration. If the surgery stopped it we are done and Dan will be able to eat and drink and gain weight and strength with no more pneumonia th… Continue

BIG CHANCE TOMORROW!

Big chance for a major turn-around in our lives. At 7 a.m. Texas time Dan will have a thyroplasty peformed which hopefully will stop his aspiration and allow him to eat and drink, as well as make his voice stronger. He is very weak from repeated aspiration pneumonia, though, and at high risk for complications and even death. So please, please, please keep us in your prayers tonight and tomorrow. Today is the longest day of the year as we both wait for and wonder about tomorrow. The good news is… Continue

Surgery Scheduled

Dear Friends, We met with the ENT surgeon today. On April 7th he will do a procedure (I believe it's called fibreplasty?) where he will surgically re-position Dan's paralyzed vocal cord in it's proper place, thereby covering his airway and hopefully stopping the aspiration of his secretions, which is causing the repeated pneumonia, which is killing him. If successful, the operation will strengthen his voice, allow him to eat and drink (he's been NPO for a year), and save his life. So it's a big,… Continue

Hi Becca:
Thanks for stopping by my page...it's good to know you are in Austin too :)
Well...my connection to the cancer is that my husband has a rare liver disorder called PSC (Not cancer, but very scary!)...we just went to blockbuster the other night and just randomly stumbled upon the cancer sexy cancer movie and we totally connected to it. It gives us hope with his disease. It's nice to know there are such inspiring people in the world and nice to know that there are things we can do to control the disease even when doctors say there isn't. Wishing you health and healing.

Thanks for your very sweet and encouraging words. My children are the only family I have left in my life, for I lost both of my praents very suddenly just 9 months apart. So, I value all friendships greatly, close or miles away. My e-mail address is Bhappy4ever6@aol.com I am attempting to upload a pic on my profile once again. I have been online all night as I was successful in getting the pics on of myself and my daughter, one of me & my son, and of course myself with my amazing oncologist & dear friend, Dr. Peter Weiss, which you may have heard of his brother, Dr. Brian Weiss. Lets stay in touch. I'll be heading down for a nap as soon as my pic goes through...Geezzzz

Becca,
Thanks so much for your warm words. Will you give me your husbands link on caringbridge. I have had several freinds that were on there. They were wonderful. My oncologist said NO WAY to the fasting, so like you I really need the emotional support. My thoughts and prayers are with you. HUGS, Patty

Hello there,
Thanks so much for checking on me! Everything is going well...I have one chemo left and I'm so excited even though I have to get ready for possible radiation in June. The bright side of June is that I will turn 25 on the 14th so I have something to look forward to. I'm so thankful to be done with this phase of treatment and super excited about the little peach fuzz growing on top of my head. I will have to update my pictures soon. I hope all is well on your end! Tah tah for now.
