About Me:
I am a 36 year-old who lives happily in Denver with my long-time boyfriend and 3-year-old son. I love to read, write, play outside, garden, travel, and spend time with friends and family. We're huge food geeks, the lot of us. Luckily they are interested and not horrified with my newish raw eating habits.
Here's the scoop: I was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer on Feb 14, 2007. Very shocking for a happy, young, active vegetarian type! It turns out I was born with a rare genetic condition called MYH associated polyposis. I lost my entire colon to it and have been through the usual cancer treatments. I finished treatments on Feb 14, 2008 funny enough! I'm doing great. Back to "normal life" stuff, feeling strong, having fun.

I think it would be a great idea. I think that some people think they know the reality of the healthcare situation, but they don't REALLY know the deal. The nitty gritty of it all. I think your angle is an important one. It is a really important issue, whether you are well or sick, an employer or employee. There is a bill up for vote here in Colorado that would require businesses of 20 or more to provide employee health insurance. So many businesses here would be in your potential situation. I would be happy to help in any way I can. I actually feel great. I'm just getting scans every 3 months or so to keep an eye on things. I bounced back from treatments quickly and am back to normal life. My busy-ness comes from hanging out with my little 3-year-old son. He doesn't let me stay on the computer for long. But my husband comes home at 8:30 then I'm free until bedtime.
Ginger is a great idea. I used it when I was pregnant. Luckily, I didn't need the anti-nausea med, but again I wanted to know the cost. And that cost was for Zofran, which almost anyone on this site is likely familiar with!
Again, I love your idea to compile some stories. Any awareness we can stir up would be helpful I think!

to continue- $1200.00 a month for anti-nausea meds!!! have you tried ginger? i have a friend and she used ginger when she was having chemo for breast cancer.
i have an idea- what if we asked everyone here to write down their stories. we could collect them, put them in a package and send them to every senator, congressman, current president, future president, hospital administrators, insurance companies, michael moore.
i could do it since unlike many people here, i'm not a full time patient or even a part time patient. my only health care horror stories revolve around how much i have to pay to insure my employees and my general disgust with the situation in this country.
what do you think?

my god! if that's the case, then my estimates of abe's care were woefully low. he had plenty of chemo and way too much radiation, lymph node surgery & sensitivity tests, a vena cava filter put in for a DVT, a medtronics pain pump and a colostomy. he spend some time in st vincents (i saw two bills, just for the rooms- $75,000 and $35,000), 1 1/2 months in Sloan Kettering and 4 1/2 months in calvary hospice
it must have been more like 2 million- and he still died!

you'd think that for $2 million, you could actually live

hey sara, i just read your health care history story on deb's page. i own a business and i provide health care for my employees- they pay 50% and i pay 50%. every year it goes up and i have to change the policy to keep it level at least. when i listened to sara pallin on the debate going on about mccain's "brilliant" health care plan, i almost had a heart attack. a $5000 tax credit for a family? my single person health insurance costs about $4000 a year! what difference is a fucking $5000 a year tax credit going to do for a family?
and he plans to get the money for the tax credit by taxing existing business health care. right now, the $100,000 a year that i spend on health care for my employees is tax deductible. if i have to pay taxes on that money, i will cancel our company's health plan in a second! and me and my employees will join the ranks of the american uninsured.
i know many people who live in europe and they are quite happy with their national health plans. all the people who write into this site about their health care horror stories are living in the states.
the way our health care system works, its only good for catastrophic care. as long as people pay into the system and remain generally healthy, then the insurance companies can make their obsene profits and still have enough to pay medical expenses for the sick and elderly.
but now, it seems everyone is sick and at younger ages- medical costs have outstripped insurance charges. and drug companies actively seek to turn us all into patients. look at all these young people with cancer here on this site! that's not suppoised to happen until you're old and you've paid into the system for your entire lifetime.
my 41 yr old friend just died of anal cancer. my estimate of his 1 1/2 yrs of grossly ineffective care is at least $800,000. since he died, he will never work again to pay anymore insurance bills. the system will self destruct under its own weight and no amount of tax credits will help prevent it.

Hey sarah.
I have a genetic condition called FAP. augest 20th 2008 I had my large intestine removed and I too have a J-pouch. I still have my ostomy though. You have clearly gone through more with it seeing as how I only had my surgery just over a month ago. I know what you mean by alot of foods dont get digested easily and just go right through. my nurse that comes told me to take 2 childrens chewable vitamins a day because they break down easier and you well get your daily nutrients.
I Hope you find something that works well for you.
P.s Its pretty scary how things happen. my father passed away from complications of colon cancer and tumours on feb. 14th 2008.

Hi Sara, I spotted you, lol at Michelle's page and had to meet you. I had stage 2 colon canser, been through surgery, radiaion, no chemo. Have been fighting the last 2 years with food issues on what will stay in the body, as opposed to what won't. I have been very careful with the foods I am eating almost to vegitarian, want to go raw. I look at the glow people have, and I want to know that feeling. My brother has been a veggie for several years and is doing great. He has been very helpful with foods. Your son is a doll, and to think, I have well, gulp several grandkids that are 3! LOL My daughter is moving out here shortly with her 3 year old, she is going to be in for a surprise, I am saving my cleanse to share with her! She is going to be so happy :) I have been on site now about 3 weeks and still meeting and finding such loving friendships and support from everyone!
Hugs,
Laurie
