RAI Treatment and Beyond

I just want people to know that RAI is NOTHING!!! It's a vacation, for goodness sake! I had talked to people that had been thru the experience, & I had expectations that my 3-day environment was going to feel space-age & strange, with everything covered in tin foil & me, the alien. The bathroom had some foil coverage, but otherwise, I had a perfectly normal looking, grande suite of a corner room with windows from floor to ceiling down an entire wall! My suite was sweet! I took in a h…

On Cloud 10: Marble Removed - Only a Fibroid Adenoma!!!

GOOD NEWS! The marble was removed from my breast last week & was BENIGN!!!! HUGE sigh of RELIEF!!! Next up: final step on 2nd Reconstruction of OTHER breast this Thurs., and then next week I start appointments building up to RAI treatment on JULY 14th! So it was back on Cytomel for the surgery, then immediately back OFF it that evening. Surprisingly, this has not 'messed" with me too much. I was extremely tired over the weekend but managed a 2-hour bikeride anyway, It's weird. I can be reall…

Be Wary of Things Going Too Smoothly or Good News/Setback

Well a lot has happened since I last wrote. I went to see my breast surgeon for my annual and in the place where I'd had a scare last year, she felt a marble. I felt it too. I WANT EVERYONE TO KNOW TO DO YOUR BREAST EXAM LAYING DOWN! I've been doing mine standing & COULD NOT feel the marble; Laying down, I felt it easily. SCARY! 2 days later she had me in getting a mammogram, BSGI & sonogram. It is a benign adenoma (when the breast cells start growing in a circle instead of a line) &…

2nd Day Hell/June 3rd

Well I became far behind in 'Alternative Adventure' blogging, but that's just how it is. As far as today, I'm into the 2nd day of being off Cytomel and it sucks already. I had a breakdown after hanging up with the hospital dietician and had to go in the public restroom at work and cry. And I cried HARD. Why, I don't exactly know. It's just food! And I'm not one of people who's picky about the food I make for myself. Yes, she streamlined my possible choices of food down even further, but so what?…

Alternative Adventure 2 - Acupuncture

I read about a 'Happy Hour" group acupuncture session held at Blue Heron Wellness in Silver Spring, MD the 3rd Thurs. of each month. Even though I feel like I've had more of my share of needles stuck into my skin, I haven't been able to escape hearing about the beneficial qualities of acupuncture. I also heard the needles are super thin. Plus, this cost only $30. I'll endure a little pain for saving some money & finally checking this thing out, I decided. There were about 5 of us in a yoga…

Complimentary Treatment 1

Since learning a few weeks ago that one of my 2 nodules removed with my thyroid had some cancerous cells, I have decided to treat my life as if I'm at a health spa. My professional job is somewhere I go for part of the day and do some work but also conduct my own cancer research and participate with CSC! Otherwise, I shop at colorful farmer's markets, cute little health food stores & buy stylish cookware with which to make my healthy, organic pescatarian meals. I see a naturopathic doctor. I…

I can't believe your timing........thank you SO much for checking in.

So, I had the biopsy of the thyroid nodule and it came back "atypical" and so the surgeon wants to take it and the right half of the thyroid out. Of course I may wake up with the whole thyroid out if the initial pathology during surgery comes back bad.

I am trying to hold the fear down.......it is just that I am SO sick to death of surgery and medical crap. I have had a mastectomy ( one each during the last two years ) and now this. I am the biggest baby ever when it comes to medical stuff.

I am scared to read any bad stories of surgery or anything but I would like to ask one question and I really want the truth even if it IS not good..........what is it like to have the drain in yuor neck and what is it like to get it out the next day?

Thank you SO much for writing.

H sweetheart, nice to meet you. I know work gets so boring...so try to get busy helping others then. Find your bliss. Get busy perhaps on-line to at a in-person support group. someone always needs help...work...necessary evil, but hey its better than unemployment lines, yes??

Hi Laura,

I just saw your page here and was looking for words of comfort if you have any.

I am a two time breast cancer survivor and this past week I was told I "probably" have thyroid cancer.........
I don't know anything for sure yet until I see the surgeon but I am in the big "WHY ME?" stage............

I just want to kow that you are okay and there is life after breast AND thyroid cancer.

I am just scared out of my wits.........

Oh my gosh that's so funny that you've been having fun with the scar-related fashion issues! For me it has been the opposite...although it is probably because I work at a magazine, one of the most superficial places on the planet. I feel very self conscious about always wearing a scarf or a high-necked top - just not my style at all. Oh well - my mom says this summer I'm embracing the nerd look :-)

Hi Laura! Thanks for the note - that is reassuring that your scar is disappearing so quickly! I had my surgery mid-March so you are about a month ahead of me. My incision is less than 1.25 inches so pretty tiny... it's just bad timing to have it now so close to summer. Bit of a fashion challenge trying to keep it out of the sun! Oh well...
