A losing battle with nutrition?

Tony, I'm glad to hear that you will have a stent. It is a bit risky, but not as risky as starving. Also glad you found the EC group. There is a lot of information about stents in the archives if y... Read More »

The Mind-Body Dilemma

Since I began studying mind-body science back in the 80s while in grad school, the concept of mind and body as one entity was novel. The attempt to influence the body through the mind was viewed as wishful thinking while trying to change the mind via the body was considered down right preposterous. As a music therapist I contradicted conventional wisdom by stimulating imagery in the minds of patients while pumping music into their brains. My patients cried, laughed and relaxed, some of them…

Nutrition and Religion

I have experienced hunger but never starvation. For 15years I was a vegetarian and those were the hungriest years of my life. My lack of money at the time contributed more to my hunger than my diet ever did. Activists, singer/songwriters and students are among the hungriest…

It's a Wonderful Life, or is it?

Whenever I’m in a group of cancer survivors, someone will eventually approach me with the jab of an elbow and a whisper and the following conversation will ensue: “Does this suck for you, or is it just me?” I respond, “Cancer sucks.” “Then, why the hell aren’t we talking about it?” “Don’t know. Everyone wants us to say that we’re living happily ever after.” “Ya, and it makes me think that I’m doing something wrong because I’m not getting that.” First of all, we’re not all living happily eve…

Serendipity

In order to complete my Reiki Master program I need to do 50 sessions per month for the next six months. That is a whole lot of Reiki. Even if I wasn’t in training I’d be a natural master after all of that. I’ve been inconsistent lately so I made a commi…

Start the Day with Gratitude

Sitting at my desk, working on a new chapter, I heard the doorbell ring. It was about 5:45 am. The bell rang a second time before I could make it downstairs. Everyone in the house but me was still asleep although the summer sun stood ready to burn a hole through the…

Thanks for your kind words. The deed is done. Hubby took the good shears and cut off big hanks of hair (I have seriously massive amounts of hair), and used the scissors to get it down to just a little more than an inch. Then we trimmed. I'm one step up from bald- just peach fuzzy and it feels freaking awesome. I can't stop touching my head! We took pics, and as soon as I get the chance, I'll post them.

Thanks, Jerome. I really appreciate your comment. I didn’t want to offend anyone who strongly believes in juicing and eating a raw diet (I think both are great in some cases) but clearly that doesn’t work for everyone. And it frustrates me when someone makes it clear that it’s not working for them but are basically told to try harder to keep on track. Nobody who hasn’t had esophageal, stomach, or any other of the digestive system cancers can really understand how difficult it can be to eat. The issues with eating during chemo for breast cancer, for instance (which is what I had) pale in comparison.

I read a statistic several times that said that 40% of people who die from cancer actually die from malnutrition so it’s really important for Tony to get his weight back up so he can keep fighting.

I liked you posting on religion and nutrition. There is a lot of dogma that I see in both – they tend to have people who feel that what they believe is the only truth. It frustrates me in both.

I see that you are training to be a Reiki master. I’ve been thinking of doing that also. The hospital I went to offered Reiki and I would get it before chemo – I couldn’t believe how much it relaxed me. The second I laid down in the chair and she started I turned into a big pile of jello. It was awesome and I miss getting it!

I kinda missed the "90's"raising children making ends meet and so on. Funny how an era can pass and you wonder were it went I hope I don't miss the "00" :>)
